On a different desktop the disk light keeps flashing and there's
nothing going on that I know of.

Could be. That machine has a gig, and I just ran the cleaning
programs last night. I opened task manager to see what was going on,
task manager is it most of the time.

The machine I'm using now shows 48 processes in task manager, it's one
that gets everything new I find. The other one is newer, hasn't as
much experience.

Stealth is a critical part of newer virii. A lot of it will never show
up in taskman, and if it does, some jackass will come up with a variant
that doesn't show up.

When I started learning about how operating systems work, especially
Windows, I was amazed at what goes on without me explicitly telling it
to do. I was particularly interested in how Windows networks hold
elections to choose who the master and secondary machines are.

Windows' networks? The stupid things won't work for me. If you're
knowledgeable, maybe I'll try again and ask for help if the things still
don't connect. I've got a wireless network to set up after this cabled
one.

With XP mine set up without me knowing anything about it, or at least
not much. Mostly I just plugged things into a router and fooled
around till they worked. Sometimes things don't work right, but
usually something works.

I've actually got training in this sort of stuff. I worked for my uncle
who ran his own networking company before Dell put him out of buisness.

Well good. I've got the one I want all picked out. I want the Intel Core
2 Extreme, and I've got a source where I can get it at a real good
price. All I need is $908.
