The other night, I was busy working down the hall.
Maia and Kristina were in our bedroom. They had been laughing about
something, but then I heard Maia start to cry. The kind of cry she makes
when she's been hurt.
I waited awhile, and when it didn't stop, I went down to see what was going
on.
Maia and Kristina were huddled in the corner by the night table next to the
bed.
"What happened?" I asked.
"Maia fell," Kristina said.
"And hit her head?" I asked.
"No," they both said.
"She hit her pep-pep," Kristina said. "Pep-pep" is a Chinese word, a kid
word for bottom.
"I hurt, I hurt, I hurt," Maia said, her words getting hung up in the way
they sometimes do, "I hurt my pep-pep," she finally said.
Then Maia thought about what she had said, as we all did, and then all three
of us started laughing at the same time.
