Object: a scare
i walk down a local side road to pick up my son at the bus stop
at a rural intersection each day. i have to do this because the
stop's on the other side of the highway. there's hardly any
traffic on this road, especially mid-afternoon on a weekday.
yesterday, while i was waiting for the bus, a panel truck came
up the street where the bus turns. it slowed way down for the
turn, seemed like more than it had to. 50 feet down the road it
came to a stop. it was probably nothing, but scared the hell out
of me. i went down the side road until i was out of sight and
ran a bit down the road. after a few minutes, i went back to
look and the truck was gone.
if it had even had a company logo on it, i don't think i would
have been so frightened, but it was just a plain white truck. if
i'd been taken there, nobody would have known. the school bus
driver would have just assumed i was late for the bus. there was
no house within sight, no cars. just me and this truck, side
door facing me. made me think about how vulnerable i am standing
there every day. i think from now on i'll at least bring my
whistle. not that it'll help much...

It could have been any of a million things completely unrelated to your life
and the events therein. Probably was in fact.

i give it a 95% chance that they weren't thinking of me at all.
it's the 5% that scares me.

If you believe that 5% is a real figure I think you need to start carrying
around an air horn.

Sadly, it's the 5% we have to pay attention the most.

i walk down isolated foot-accessable roads at the reservoir, so
i am very much aware of being a female alone. i also spent a lot
of time in manhattan as a teen, and that 'always pay attention
around you' thing always stuck with me.

Lisa,
i too am glad that you are okay. in addition to the whistle, may i
suggest also having mace or pepper spray and a phone with you, where
ever you go, at all times. perhaps even a sharp object for life-saving
self defence, should the need for drastic action ever arrise.
they will come in handy for times like you described. at least to give
you some sense of security and defence, especially if a worse situation
happens where someone actually trys anything.
good idea for everyone that walks or drives alone, be they in the city,
suburbs or rural areas.
sorry if this all sounds so incredibly obvious. im tired, depressed
and not thinking 100% clearly.
again, glad your alright!!

you make good sense. as of today i have a phone that works
here, and tomorrow i'll talk to the police about how one might
go about carrying mace/pepper spray in this state.
what happened yesterday was probably nothing. it's just the
improbable possibility that scared the hell out of me. after
all, when i run to get dan at the bus, i don't usually even
have id with me, other than my medic alert bracelet. i guess
at least i have that.

Oh, Lisa---I am so, so relieved you're alright, now!!! What a fright
you must of had! I can relate to your experience. I was followed,
once, and believed I was followed, amy times, in a town in South
Africa I lived. I'd get this feeling somebody was following me, and
I'd turn into the next public building (which was pretty available--I
didn't walk in really rural part of the town alone) and the person
behind me would walk off into another direction. The time I was
actually followed I walked right into the police station, which was a
few feet from where I was being followed. Luckily I was not followed
by a group, but I do not know what the follower had planned.
I get spooked when somebody walks up close to me (when there isn't
much of anybody else around), and that's when I turn around or say or
do something, like walk away or question the follower. I onced turned
around and asked this man (rather meanly) why he was following me--I
gave him a fright.
I have it all, mace/phone/other things legal and weaponable, and I am
careful about where I go and where I am (I go to school a couple of
evenings a week in Downtown Boston). You wouldn't think that by
walking in a rural part of a relatively safe town that you'd not get
bothered--but a rapist or some other brand of a perverted idiot will
take the oppotunity of taking advantage of a lone, 'unarmed' woman,
walking.
Take very good care of yourself, and again, I am glad you're safe!

Lisa, Glad your okay, No its not silly to be scared . You have to
be aware in the world today. Its not a very safe place.
Did you have your cell phone with you? If anything happens
like that again, call someone. So someone at least knows whats
happening!

my cellphone didn't work near my house; no coverage in my
area. as of tonight, i have a new provider, the only one i can
use from my house. i'll definitely have my phone with me from
now on.

<shiver> a whistle is good because it
can scare someone off and Jill's cell
phone reminder was very good, too. Once
I pretended to be using one in a similar
situation and the car sped up and moved
on. And carrying mace might feel
reassuring, too. There have been a
number of incidents around here with
cars/vans slowing down around lone women
on foot -- but they were flashers, not
abductors. Glad you're okay, Lisa.

as i said to jill, i just tonight am set up with a cellphone
that works in my area. i think we need a firearms card to get
and carry mace, don't we? i guess it's worth asking about.
