Someone set off the alarm to the lobby downstairs. It's really loud.
It's giving me a headache. Good thing I didn't already try to put my
daughter to bed.

my condo in atlanta had the loudest alarm and they had some problems
with it for a few months where it went off every few nights...each
unit had a siren and the cats and I would jolt up and look around and
at each other and just panic for a few seconds...that was *****

I brought one in on my own dime, a $79 initial visit fee. The lines
were frozen, this was a few weeks ago, and he quoted me $375 to add a
device that would prevent that in cold weather (my apartment is still
too warm even when its cold out). I'll call him again shortly as its
warming up to assess its warm weather efficiency, it's been feeling
great recently though. Maybe management got the hint, I had to
approve it with them.
I did get a notice on my door though that management was turning down
all our thermostats to meet some ADA guidelines or some *****, what
does that mean first of all, it means nothing to me and will that
reduce effectiveness.

Some sort of defrost control? this can happen in the colder months, icing
up can also indicate a system that is low in refrigerant charge, thus there
may be a leak in the system. The best conditions for checking this is in
the cooling cycle (summer conditions) not sure of your weather there at the
moment? but yeah, definitely follow this up.

You should have your own thermostat on the wall to regulate this? maybe
they are asking you to turn them down a bit, or they have a master control
somewhere, not too sure of that one either?

I was pissing myself laughing when an A/C folk came into
the office at work and turned one of the screws holding the
cover plate on the thermocouple thinking they were adjusting
something. As anyone would imagine, that wasn't the problem.
I laughed even harder when I removed the face plate to
find only a non adjustable thermocouple.

thermocouple? don't you mean anticipator? thermostat?
When I removed the faceplate (because nothing had
changed) I discovered a thermocouple on a small circuit
board. No means of adjustments in sight, while at the
same time discoving the screw at the base of the unit
the guy had been turning was a screw to hold the cover
on.

I catch what ya saying, but thermostats don't have thermocouples, a
thermocouple is usually for a pilot operated gas valve or similar, to keep
your pilot light going. You sure you are not confusing this with a
thermistor or anticipator?
Anticipator settings on electric cooling thermostats are generally not
adjustable, same as with a programmable thermostat.

when our fire alarm went off in the dorms at college (prank that
happened all the time during exam week for some reason) we'd hide in
the closets because they forced everyone out and onto the quad until
the entire building was inspected, usually a 45 minute process at 3 am

Urk. Yeah, they are not the best technology.
Gathering in a room, and not being told to get the

Fire alarms that scream "Wolf wolf" (according to

We've got a lot of elderly people in this complex, so it's pretty
regular for that to happen, and I know it's wrong, but everytime they
