Object: Am I depressed?
Hi everyone,
My doctor said I should do some research about depression. I told him
that I threw myself at working when I was down. I also have some
other issues, I hardly eat at all. I know I under eat, but I have not
had to face it since I have never had anemia or nutritional problems.
In the past 3 months I have started to suffer from extreme feelings of
depression, but they only last 1 day or so. Then I go back to feeling
normal. The depression does not come from not eating per se, since it
will happen whether I am eating normally or not.
Please advise?

Maybe it's depression, maybe it is a nutritional problem. You
say that you feel it whether or not you're eating, but it could
be from a chronic nutritional problem, not something that will
go away from just eating one meal. Is your diet healthy and
balanced? Even if you are suffering from clinical depression
(and I'm not sure you are), good nutrition is important.

I dont understand why your doctor is asking you to research a possible
depression condition. I thought he/she would try to help you and if
not qualified at least refer you on to an expert. What are your other
issues? You say not eating much is not a problem, so why are you
mentioning it, why is this important? When you say extreme feelings of
depression, how is this affecting your daily routine? I am glad to
hear the episodes do not last long but how often have they appeared
over the last few years, is there any history? Have there been any
triggers in the last 3 months ie. an occurrance/event where you
started to feel bad. What is your age?
I am not an expert, but recognise some of what you say, but its
difficult to advise without some more information. FYI I have been
thinking of seeking some help with recurring short term depression
episodes.

I think my doctor asked me to do some reading on it because he does
not think I have a terrible problem. I did not ask for any help and I
answered all his questions honestly. I didn't ask for a referal. A
friend of mine thinks I undereat which is why I mentioned it. It is
something I would really like to get under my control, but haven't
been able to yet. However, like I said I don't think it is direction
connected to my depressed times. This has only started in the last 6
months. I can't think of any event that triggers it. These episodes
now do not seem linked to any reason. I am 23.

I suppose if you read up on it you might conclude that youre not
depressed, but that doesnt mean you should ignore what is happening.
Perhaps there is just something your body is missing, such as exercise
or sharing thoughts with a friend. I would suggest that throwing
yourself into work is a good why to ignore the issue, but may only
serve to mask any problems until they become more pronounced.
I wish you good luck.

I forgot to add, the depression only comes in the evening or weekend.
I feel like just really sad almost stunned. It lasts about 1 hour. I
can get up and do things or go somewhere on errands, but the feeling
is still lingering and sometmes returns when I am sitting still again
on the same day. This happens maybe once a week or more. No history
just keeps happening the last 6 months. My mother suggested eating
bread to get more vitamin B12, which seemed to help a little when I am
sad.

You seem like a very caring and responsible person. A lot of what you are
experiencing may require a regimen similar to what I have, a Trileptal or
Tegretol, Cymbalta/Effexor, and Resperdol. I also take Imiprimine to help me
sleep. Blogging or journaling may also be of help, including attending
therapy. These feelings you are having are apart of you, remember that
dialing a crisis number is always helpful if you begin to feel like you need
someone to talk with.
Also, be sure to tell you psychiatrist about your loss of appetite, it may
be a side effect of a medication you're already taking, or perhaps a
symptom. I would stay on it since it takes awhile to become accustomed to.
I hope that this is helpful.

David's extremely delusional and his advice on medications is
dangerous which should be obvious from the post (suggesting 5 strong
meds to someone just exploring depression as a possibility) but just
in case you didn't realize...
ASD should really have a disclaimer ready to go as every new poster
gets the same "attention" from David

Hey David,
This person is not being treated for depression, wouldn't be
on psych meds, and is questioning whether there's a serious
problem or not. I suggest you read the post before pushing
