Object: America isn't perfect, but it's my home
Going through the immigration checkpoint at the airport and having the
border patrol (?) agent say "Welcome home!" or "Welcome back!" after
swiping my passport, made me realize that this is my home after all.
Most of my ancestors were from China, but I've never been there, I've
never been a Chinese citizen, and I don't even speak the language.
Although China is one of my two ancestral homelands, it will never be my
"home." The remainder of my ancestors originated in Germany. Again, I've
never lived there, and I've never been a German citizen. Although I do
speak some German, and I frequently visit relatives there, it will never
be my "home" either. I don't look German, which is a big obstacle to
ever feeling at home there. On the other hand, I don't look completely
Chinese either.
Anywhere else in the world, I wouldn't even have any ancestry as a
connection, and it would be even harder to be accepted.
Here in America, at least there are job opportunities, regardless of
your race. Having the US border police welcome me home makes me realize
that this is in fact my home, for better or for worse.

America used to be a great nation until the Bush's got into office.
Now it's the same as Nazi Germany was.

I disagree... at least Hitler was honest. He defined who his enemies were
and said what he was going to do about them, in public, on the record.
Bush is either too cowardly to admit what he's doing or too ignorant to
realize what he's doing.

It is good that you can feel this way. Do you think your recent
medication change has anything to do with your feelings? I'm guessing
that your ability to have certain kinds of feelings is improving.

Or, you can say that the US has absolutely the very WORST sort of government
.... until you compare it to everything else available out there.
(Paraphrasing Winston Churchill on democracy)
We Americans tend to evaluate ourselves by absolutes. By that sort of
standard, we are terrible, since no realistic governmental structure can
ever live up to absolutist expectations.
I do think it would be good for every American to be forced to spend two
years in another country ... so he could begin to see us by comparision with
reality, rather than with wishful absolutist criteria.
In my not-so-humble opiniion, with all of its faults, the United States of
America is still the best place to live in the world, and the greatest hope
of mankind. If that makes me a chauvinist, so be it.

I think I would have difficulty tolerating the heat (even Southern
California is too hot for me), but otherwise it would be a good idea.

Yes, I know. I have met some people from Hawaii. Thanks for the
suggestion, and if I could stand the heat, I might have considered
moving there!
