It was raining at our usual park so we drove towards the opposite end of
this side of the island, out towards Pearl City.
I explained that we were having an adventure. "Not adventure," Maia
insisted. "Park."
We finally found one. Lots of parking places, Maia said, in her way of
saying that. "Parking places" have figured large in our lives these last 12
months of outings.
She played for a while on a climbing structure with some other children, all
of whom were older and larger than she.
Then she wanted to take off for what looked like more climbing structure
stuff but turned out to be an exercise station--little signs told you how to
use the stuff to do back curls, and steps, and the like.
There was an older guy there that Maia took an interest in. Never know to
whom she's going to gravitate. He would turn around or look up from doing
one of his exercises and find Maia staring at him.
I know it pleased him. He smiled at her and said hello. I don't mind that
sort of thing, though a part of me wants to teach her caution at some point.
For now, I feel like I'm in charge of some kind of valuable community
resource. I know she's going to bring smiles to people, and that that's
going to make them feel better than they thought they were going to.
Now I'm going to go take a nap.
Night.
