And a good time was had by both. |
Great concert. Bach Motets, by the Yorkshire Bach Choir, and solo hymns
by Emma Kirkby, early music prima donna.
We drove to York, and, after a futile attempt to use their much vaunted
Park and Ride scheme (it finishes at 20.30!) we drove into the centre
and parked by the castle.
A nice wander across the city to the Minster, and into the church
opposite - St Michael le Belfry, for those who know York - where the
concert was held. We were twenty minutes early, and still had to sit in
the back pew. We got back by 22:00, in time to have free evening time.
I closed my eyes for one of the choral pieces, and got the lines moving
to the music I sometimes get. One of the high notes was definitely
yellow. I suppose it counts as borderline synaesthesia.
There was a man in with the contraltos, singing with them. Presumably he
was a counter-tenor. Do they have the same range as contraltos, does
anyone know? A bit odd, anyway.
My wife decided that English and Latin were better languages for singing
in than German. I still think Italian's hard to beat.

The opinions given above may be mine. They might also
just be what I feel like saying right now, okay?

I'm glad you enjoyed it. A church is the perfect place for a
Bach concert, I'd think.

It's a nice Tudor church, with good acoustics, in the nave, at least.
I'm not sure the stained glass is original. They seem to put on at least
one Bach concert a year; we've been to them there before, as a part of
the Early Music Festival.

I sang Bach in the shower in college, so that everyone on the
dorm hall could hear. I didn't think of that at the time.
