So last August my beloved and much modified sport sedan (Integra) was
totalled by a careless driver who cooked his brakes coming down the canyon.
This last tues we had an all day sleet-athon, which turned into fluffy
powder later in the day. So we got that most excellent condition of the
fluffy white over the icy black. On my way home I found myself at an angle
quite different than that of the roadbed, and indeed crossed upon the
sidewalk...into a yard and found a tree. Well, I didn't find the tree, the
grille of my car found that. I found the steering wheel and the windscreen.
It was a slow speed impact so the airbags didn't deploy, but I managed to
put my bottom teeth through my lower lip entirely, place a 3 inch gash on
the right side of my chin and have to get the whole of my tissues on the
inside of my chin/lower jaw stitched back on. 48 stitches for those who like
such stats.
Right now I've the fattest lip ever seen (still, on Sat!) and just now am I
able to eat foods such as cream of wheat.
So that makes for 2 totalled cars in less than 5 months, with over 300,000
trouble free miles of driving experience beforehand.
The physical pain I can stand, what's so tough about this is that I *hate*
car shopping and it *has* to be a Volvo. And I hate car shopping. I went and
drooled over the V50 T5AWD (hell of a car!)...at least with a more modern
car they won't total the vehicle from a spreadsheet as much.
I hate this.
I loved my old car, moved on...got to love the new car...but now I don't
have a friend in the repo business to do my searching for me anymore.
This should all go away, My lip should stop throbbing, me head should stop
pounding and my wonderful 850 should go back to
mint............................................

sorry to hear all that Franz but glad your still in 1 piece (+ or -). I know
what you know about swede bricks. I got my 2nd brick after a 4wd used my 1st
for bull bar target practice. One thing i can testify from that experience
is that these cars crumple well, as they are supposed to (in absorbing
impact energy). But, i'd rather keep this no.2 one uncrumpled coz it's now
tricked up just fine (mainly handling wise) and running nice
it's funny coz i always viewed the volvo option dimly until i owned 1. Hope
you get another goodie to enjoy the next 300,000(+) trouble free miles in
comfort and safety. The older volvos are getting thinner on the ground but i
still see good deals over here with low k's (and probably in good nick).
Might be worth keeping an eye on alt.autos.volvo (fwiw)

I was the same way, I was a Honda nut forever until a friend of mine bought
a 96 850R. The car was such a stealth rocketship I couldn't help but love
that. Then once I started really looking at the car, the quality to which it
is built is so impressive. Just closing the door feels like locking a vault.
Some stuff is a pain in the ***** (installing an aftermarket stereo...and all
the friggin torx bits) but it also makes a lot of sense (Alpine components,
an integrated window antenna, REAL hard to strip a torx...).
The inline 5 engine is a work of art.
I've already got a line on a couple of old ladies (no...REALLY) who own 2
wagons and a GMC Yukon. They're looking to sell a red metallic one...she
says it's a 98 which would make it a v70 but I'm hoping it's a 97 so it will
be an 850. Not much difference except what I can expect to pay. Perhaps
she'll give me a good deal...she's selling it because she has polio and uses
her Yukon to get around these days.
But I'm getting ahead of myself, I still haven't heard back from my
insurance company about anything and I have to close out the loan on that
car....
In my imagination though I just scored myself a 98 v70 t-5! vroooom!
I read alt.autos.volvo pretty frequently too, but it seems to be geared to
the older RWD volvos. Bay13 is one of the most helpful, and I'm going to be
unbolting a lot of IPD gear before this poor smashed brick leaves the
driveway.

ouch! sorry you're in so much pain.
it sounds like the airbags should have deployed. i'd look info
it. if the crash was bad enough to cause injury and total the
car (no matter the bluebook), you should have been protected.
can the insurance company check that out? especially if you
had medical coverage, the reulting suit could save them money.

Below an impact speed of 13 km/h, no airbag deployment is desired according
to my manual.

even a volvo won't be able to withstand a collision with something much
bigger and heavier, for example a Ford F-150. the new F-150 got great
crash test results, and it is *much* bigger and heavier than any volvo.

again, if a full-size truck crashes into your "wonderful" volvo 850,
there won't be much left of your car (or you).
another issue is why any man would want to drive an acura integra or a
volvo (or a saab, subaru, or volkswagen). i certainly wouldn't want to,
because of the image that driving such a car projects.

I like the Volvo, though I've never owned one.
My friend's second car was a DL stationwagon.
He paid $250 and it was in mint condition.
Another friend teaches music at the university here and has driven his
DL for 15 years. One summer about 6 years ago I backed my Suburban
into it's front end. It sounded like a gunshot and moved the DL back
about 6 inches. All that went through my head was the cost of parts
and labor as I repaired the damage. There was not even a scratch on
the rubber coating of his bumper.
A friend of my father's is a Volvo fanatic.
He was finishing his computer science degree as we were starting an
educational software company, back in 1993. He would stop over with
discards from the department and spend as much as 18 hours at a clip
trouble shooting jumper settings. One year he was offered contract at
the university and the first thing he did was back order a turbo sport
sedan Volvo.
At the beginning of 2004 I got rid of my 1985 Suburban.
The old one was two wheel drive and a beast during snow removal trips.
I replaced it with a newer 1500 series GMC.
This afternoon we got about 6 inches of snow and ice and it was my
first trip of the season with the snow machine.
I am amazed at how much easier the experience has been.
I hope your lip heals well.
I bet it does hurt like hell right now.
Don't let it get infected.

able to eat foods such as cream of wheat.

So that makes for 2 totalled cars in less than 5 months, with over

300,000

trouble free miles of driving experience beforehand.

The physical pain I can stand, what's so tough about this is that I

*hate*

car shopping and it *has* to be a Volvo. And I hate car shopping. I

went and

drooled over the V50 T5AWD (hell of a car!)...at least with a more

modern

car they won't total the vehicle from a spreadsheet as much.

I hate this.

I loved my old car, moved on...got to love the new car...but now I

don't

have a friend in the repo business to do my searching for me anymore.

This should all go away, My lip should stop throbbing, me head should

stop

pounding and my wonderful 850 should go back to
mint............................................

So last August my beloved and much modified sport sedan (Integra) was
totalled by a careless driver who cooked his brakes coming down the
canyon. This last tues we had an all day sleet-athon, which turned into
fluffy powder later in the day. So we got that most excellent condition of
the fluffy white over the icy black. On my way home I found myself at an
angle quite different than that of the roadbed, and indeed crossed upon
the sidewalk...into a yard and found a tree. Well, I didn't find the tree,
the grille of my car found that. I found the steering wheel and the
windscreen.

It was a slow speed impact so the airbags didn't deploy, but I managed to
put my bottom teeth through my lower lip entirely, place a 3 inch gash on
the right side of my chin and have to get the whole of my tissues on the
inside of my chin/lower jaw stitched back on. 48 stitches for those who
like such stats.

Right now I've the fattest lip ever seen (still, on Sat!) and just now am
I able to eat foods such as cream of wheat.
