Excuse my ignorance ;) isn't 'chingar' (as a verb) slang for 'to *****'? Then what would 'chingao' mean?
My guess: 'fucked-up person'. But that sounds like an insult to me. What's the right translation?

You are partially right. Chingar ----->to *****. but it has many more
meanings, and is not necessarily a verb. Chinga'o as I wrote is translated
as a vulgar: "good grief".
This is one of the most perplexing words to insult ant to refer to things
for the non-native Mexican speaker. I'll give you some examples:
Que chingados! ------> You confront someone about a possible problem.
Me chingaron ------> You lose, or something non-legal (in the moral or
legislative way) was done to you.
Me lleva la chingada! -------> something bad is happening to you.
Soy un chingón ------> You are very good at something (ej physics)
Chingonería ------> Something super-nice.
Chingaderita ------> something of no value
Chingadazo ------> a real big hit to your body or a thing (like your car)
Chinga a tu madre! The worst insult ever in Mexico, mother fucker would be
close enough.
I could be sitting here all night giving you examples. There are much more.

Amazing. Plasticity made word, it seems. I stand in awe :O
I don't think we have anything that flexible over here... 'joder' comes to mind, but for what you describe it doesn't even come close.
I bet you play at your heart's desire with the clueless spanish tourists over there... but I won't be confused that easily. When I visit Mexico, I'll hire a local translator ;)
I couldn't sleep, so I did a quick search on the word to kill some time. It didn't look like latin to me, I suspected a native american word. Wrong, as usual. It's not latin, but it isn't american either:
From the Dictionary of the Royal Academy:
Chingar:
From gypsy language Äingarár, to fight.
1. To importunate, to bother.
2. (Vulgar) To have intercourse.
3. (Colloquial) To drink spirits often.
4. (Central America) To cut an animal's tail.
5. (Canary Islands) To splash, to spatter, to sprinkle.
6. To tinkle.
7. (Argentina, Uruguay) To hang a garment's selvage in an odd way (what?).
8. To get drunk.
9. (Canary Islands, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia) To fail, to not aim, to get frustrated.
I only knew nº 2, 'to shag'.
It doesn't even mention Mexico. Stupid dictionary.

'Selvege' is the edge of woven cloth, treated (with glue?) so that it
doesn't un-ravel before it is made into a garment (at which point the
selvege usually gets cut off). Perhaps the dictionary means 'garment made
from cloth cut on the bias', ie with the 'warp' and 'weft' going
diagonally instead of vertically and horizontaly; that makes the garment
soft and clingy and slightly stretchy, which can be quite sexy.

Thanks for the explanation, Mr Whiskers!! ;)
(Actually the dictionary was in spanish, but knowing absolutely nothing about cloths, weaving or garment-making, I didn't quite understand the original... my translation was thus the best I could come with of something I didn't quite get in the first place, so it's not a surprise it looks even more garbled in english ;)
BTW, long time no read... holidays off the computer?

I suspected that something of the sort might be involved. I'm impressed
that you managed to translate it at all, let alone well enough for me to
make an 'educated guess' at a different rendering.
Speaking of translations - I downloaded the mp3 of 'Un anyo Mas' that you
linked to recently; I like the performance, and the song :)) I did think
I might have a go at some English words, but so far I haven't been up to
it.
BTW, long time no read... holidays off the computer?
More a case of a med switch leaving me rather iffy; I've concentrated my
efforts in a more local support group, and some days haven't even looked
at ASD/F, but I am trying to keep up.

Janithor's posting styles have generated some adverse opinions in the
past, but I don't recall anyone suggesting he was racist, so I'm sure
the local synagogue will be willing to convert him, if he's persistent
enough. Of course, his children wouldn't be Jewish unless wombn converts
too. Still, it'll give them something to do in the evenings. And
Shabbat. And Sunday (main day for classes). For a year or two. Then he
can look around for a Shul that uses Yiddish; I'll bet there are some in
the USA.

Jewishness is passed down the mother's line. A Jewish mother has Jewish
children, whatever her partner is. A Jewish father only has Jewish
children if his partner is Jewish, or if they convert. Conversion may be
easier for children, but it's a long process for adults like Janithor -
unlike Christians and Moslems, Jews aren't usually after converts.
