Uh, "Make Believe Gardens" is what the Rest Of Canada calls Maple Leaf Gardens
in Toronto. (Because it's where the Toronto Maple Leafs pretend they're a hockey
team.)
So pursent says you're doing a concert gig at the Gardens. Pretty sweet
compliment, eh!

That gets a ***** poor rating, however if you only need the

I can't even look at that, based on the ratings. Here is me on
youtube doing it (the instrumental part)in the middle of message in a
bottle. Need to arrange it to at least get to the 'no education'
part. Teachers...drinking and screaming it...should be cool.

Place a request on alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.1970's. There's a guy there
who has EVERYTHING. UUEncoding is so 1998. You'll need a yDec compiler
for the multipart files. It works kinda like WinZip, pretty easy.
There's free ones on shareware sites.
[huh? yDec? what the hell is that?]
[text-based encoding. better quality and faster downloading.]
[ask 'em over there]
um... the song title is "Another Brick in the Wall". :)

I don't play to dancers. This is a special occasion one time song. I
don't do cover tunes. It just flowed out during practice, the drummer
is a teacher, it sounded great, and it's just a song we want to pull
out of our collective ***** for a particular gig.
"How can you eat your meet if you don't eat your pudding?"
She teaches 4 year olds. The other day, a teacher said, "K*^#$on
wants to play you his drum solo song." So the boy sets 3 tambourines
around him, sits down, back toward the teachers, turns around to them
and says, "Ready?"...and he turns back, starts beating the tambourines
with sticks, singing...."You're not my girlfriend! You're not my
girlfriend!" and my drummer says, "K*^#on, are there any more words?"
He turns and says, "Yes!" and turns back to banging the tambourines
and starts singing, "Cause I broke up with you, cause I broke up with
you!"

What a memory this evokes for me.
I got that album on vinyl the week it came out. I wore out the
grooves, even on a turntable with a constantly-cleaned stylus and a
Discwasher. I bought myself a high-end stereo as a birthday present.
$1200 in 1979. Saved like a fiend for months to get it. My mom thought
I was nuts at first, then she started playing her jazz albums on it. I
love jazz and didn't mind. It picked up nuances Pink Floyd put on that
album that are hard to hear on CD.
My current three-speaker computer sound system sounds almost as good.
No $45 tone arm cartridges and recalibration every three to six
months, either. Heh, I got this thing for $45, with shipping, on eBay
three years ago (retail $85). Technology is amazing.
I can't listen to The Wall anymore. It's a masterpiece, but Personal
Trigger Central. Same with Supertramp. Those artists got me through my
most suicidal years and toughest therapy work. Much as I love music, I
have to leave some of it in the past.
Another Brick in the Wall is an awesome track. So is Run Like Hell.
Enjoy, folks.

I'm getting lost here. I download from this newsgroup all the time, I
download from binary newsgroups like this all the time and I don't use any
kind of special compiler. As far as I know you just need to use a newreader
that is designed to handle binary files, something like Agent, not something
like Outlook Express. Why would you need a special compiler? I use two
different newsreaders, one for text based newsgroups like this one, and a
different one for binary downloading -- wouldn't any decent newsreader made
for binary downloads have all that built in?
Sure, get Quickpar or a program like it for quick assembling of tv shows and
movies, longer binary files like that, but music is usually (not always) one
mp3 at a time.
If you are going through all that work, you are putting yourself through a
hell of a lot of ***** for nothing. Claudia, if you need a copy of agent
with a key, I'd be glad to get it to you, through email, instant messenger,
whatever.

True times twenty, sister. Hey, lemme perception check something with you
since you said this. It's my impression that that a number of people mainly
use their computer to play music now, since you can get great digital
quality with great speakers and all that without having to shell out for a
major stereo syste. Is that wrong, do you think, that it's not that unusual
for some people to use their computers instead of CD players? The reason I
ask is, I asked BTT in Scotland if he had a CD player, contemplating sending

Depends on the newsgroup and the content. Many still use UUEncoding.
The binary groups I visit are about 80 percent yDec.

I use Agent. It's an older version because my machine is old. It
handles UUEncode. I tried upgrading but the newer version ran too
slowly. I think the newer versions handle yDec.

My yDec compiler is a simple DOS-based thing. It runs quickly on this
machine. I join multipart files with Agent and copy them to the
compiler directory. It takes two minutes, at most, to decode several
files. No hassle at all.

Not at all. IMO, it's common sense. These little speakers amaze me,
only 40 watts, but they fill the room with sound. It's my second
system of its brand (Altec Lansing). The previous one lasted over five
years. This one's nearly four years old and going strong. If it quits,
I'll get another. One of these days, I'll go to Radio Shack for a
splitter cable to connect it to the DVD player. It's cheaper to go to
the store than pay shipping on the website. Home-theater system? No,
thanks. What I have will do the same job.
I have a belt-clip CD player. It's only used for audiobooks. I have a
hard time concentrating on long versions of printed matter, even with
prescription bifocals. Audiobooks work, with a headset to avoid
distractions. I like to lay in bed while "reading" or take it to the
park. All of the functions on my boombox quit except the radio and I
have no intention of replacing it. I use it to listen to NPR. If
there's a show I want to hear that my local station doesn't run, I
listen via NPR's online audio stream or download a podcast.
I wanted an MP3 player for years, but they were way beyond my means. I
found an affordable one, self-contained headset, on eBay. Only 512K,
but it suits my purposes. Some folks in my support group listened to
it and said the quality was surprisingly good. The eBay vendor sold
all the units he had and I haven't seen them on the site since. :(
There's no cord to get in the way unless it's charging or being
reloaded via USB. It's perfect for working out, the bus, household
chores or turning up the volume at night. (My subwoofer sometimes
disturbs sleeping neighbors.) Had it for six months. If I get the year
warranty's worth out of it, the useful value will exceed the price. By
then, a decent 1 or 2 GB might within my means, since prices are
finally dropping. I don't trust refurbs.
Good music quality was expensive until the late nineties. When I think
about my 1979 stereo, I shake my head. Almost anything under $1K
sounded like total crap. I consider music a necessity. Most people in
my building are the same and we're all broke. Some don't have TV's,
but they have music. Mostly on computers. :)

I rarely see people carrying CD players. They have MP3 players, or if
they're of modest means, radio headsets. I assume those with computers
play music on them at home. The modest types probably have boomboxes
or use their headsets.
Like you, I rarely listen to music CD's anymore. If I do, it's on the
computer. When a PC component blows up and I have to save to replace
it, my portable player plugs into the sound system, which has its own
power. Like you said, why use anything else?

Ah, I get it now. It's finding the right workaround to deal with a
resources
issue. Gotcha. Yeah, the newer versions of Agent have all the good stuff
working in them; I'm bummed that it doesn't work for you, but if you're just
doing music and audiobooks, you don't need that stuff anyway, really. I
watch almost everything on my computer instead of the TV set so I need
that stuff to download the video.

You geeky girl. Guys who watch lots of Star Trek reruns are falling in love

kind of fun knowing how to do that stuff, and I pretend it makes up for my
not
knowing how to change my own oil. Yay geeky girls!

I appreciate the offer, but I'm set. I only download occasionally,

Thanks for having the patience to explain it to me. Hey, if you ever want
some
video stuff but don't want to to do all the pain in the butt stuff, I'd be
glad to grab
stuff for you whole off easynews and transfer it to you somehow, like with
instant
messenger or something. bunny at blarg dot net, any time.

Not at all. IMO, it's common sense. These little speakers amaze me,

I use that brand too, they're great! Instant wall of sound rocking the
room.

Now see, that's what I think too. Why pay a whole bunch more money when
this works so well? Thank you!

I have a belt-clip CD player. It's only used for audiobooks. I have a
hard time concentrating on long versions of printed matter, even with
prescription bifocals. Audiobooks work, with a headset to avoid
distractions. I like to lay in bed while "reading" or take it to the

This makes me really happy. I remember we talked about audiobooks a few
years ago and I was so, so wanting you to be able to get into them. I need
audiobooks, NEED them, I cannot imagine life without them. I used to be a
voracious
reader of printed books and when I started having those concentration
problems,
audiobooks solved that for me. I can still devour several books a week
thanks to
the miracle of audiobooks. I usually can't get to sleep without them,
either, but when
someone is reading a story in my ear, it's a totally different story. And
if you can find
a reader you love, then it's like a little bit of heaven every night.
Do you have trouble finding comfortable headphones you can wear in bed and
fall
asleep in? The absolute best for me is still a pair of Sonys you can get
for ten bucks.
The earpieces are smooth and curve slightly into the ear canal. They're not
really
sturdy so I have to replace them every several months, but it's worth if for
the comfort
of something I can sleep on without waking up with a cauliflower ear.
I did that same thing with a portable CD player until I got an IPOD as a
present. I
just cannot recommend audiobooks for folks like us enough.
All of the functions on my boombox quit except the radio and I

have no intention of replacing it. I use it to listen to NPR. If
there's a show I want to hear that my local station doesn't run, I
listen via NPR's online audio stream or download a podcast.

You're starting to freak me out. NPR is my station too! Time to move
to Seattle and hang out. :-)

Yeah, for the active stuff, it's nice to have something to listen to that
lets
you move around without worries of skipping. I had trouble finding the
right way to carry my ipod around with me until I discovered it was perfect
tucking it into my cleavage, where it stays snuggly nestled. That's how I
walk
around most of the day. You're right, prices will continue to drop and
you'll
find something for the right price. Yay you!

THANK you! I knew people had to be doing this! I've got a decent stereo

currently hooked
up to it because I use the computer.

Unless by "better quality" you simply mean "smaller", this claim makes
no sense. A lossless binary-to-text encoding format like UUencode has to
give you the original file EXACTLY bit-for-bit identical to the original
or it's worthless -- think of the implications for encoded executables.
I suppose what is possible is that the yDec-encoding crowd is so kewl
(no Mama's Boys there!) that they start with higher quality MP3s to
begin with, which could confuse the confusable into thinking the yDec
format is responsible for the better sound, but I know my Chim-Chim
better than to think she could be that naive.
Anyway, MP3s make Baby Jesus cry. He prefers AAC.

Most people post tunes ripped at 160 kbps or above. The standard used
to be 128. Albums are usually 256. I have limited storage space and
don't bother with anything over 192. Gimme a break.

Most people post tunes ripped at 160 kbps or above. The standard used
to be 128. Albums are usually 256. I have limited storage space and
don't bother with anything over 192. Gimme a break.

yDec downloads faster. Period.

First semantics, now sound formats. What will he think of next?

I wonder what Baby Jesus thinks of Blu-Ray and HD terrestrial radios.
Is anyone even going for those things?

Oh Gawd. This brings to mind one of my least favourite memories. When my
oldest was 16 he thought it would be funny to run a scene from a movie (can
remember the name now) as his opening message. Some guy screaming,
"Bumbaclot (sp) I'm gonna cut you and kill you effing bumbaclot!" Not
having warned me first I called his phone which jumps right to the voice of
this screaming killer and for a several seconds I thought he had turned his
phone on in the middle of a real life underground parking lot attack. I
nearly ***** myself. Until I hung up in shock, called the number again and
after getting the exact same message, I realized it was recorded. When he
got home several hours later I struggled between wanting to squeeze him in a
hug or kill him. I hugged him. Then promised to kill him if he ever scared
me like that again. :-)

haha...children.

haha...oh man, that must trigger the fight or flight reaction, and
it's always "fight" when a mother is involved.
Here's a story that just came to mind: Mrs Lussier calls my mother, I
hear her in the kitchen on the phone, my mother is repeating what she
is saying, giving me the 'you are in trouble look', and I am 12 at the
kitchen table, my Mrs. L is saying I did some ***** to her son, or
something....I ask my mother "can I speak to her?" She gives me the
phone...."Mrs Lussier, you're nothing but a lying creep lady and your
son is a f'ing idiot and I hate you!!!!"
My mother is standing there laughing like mad.
That's a good memory.

Ewwwwww! Slasher-pic answer messages are just wrong. It's obvious that
the hip-hop guy on my phone is joking.
Sorry about the memory. :(
