Bear with me while I whine |
Using a free news server (nntp.aioe.org) because my ISP changed theirs to a
paid service without any warning. The free one is restrictive but not so
bad. How long should it take for posts to show up? Anyone know of
unlimited free servers they are hiding and not talking about? It is going
to take time to get used to it. Except for a few hours this morning this
day sucked. Sigh...

Hi Rhi, you can whine all you like, that's what this place is for, ya know
?
As for free news servers, i don't know of any that are currently working
that allow posting, except the nntp.aioe.org one. Even my paid ISP news
server is highly unreliable. I am a Dejanews person at heart.... er. called
'google groups' these days. nothing wrong with deja/google if you're
without a news server, IMO.
I've found that nntp.aioe.org gets posts out pretty quickly, about the same
as my ISP news server or deja/google. Free ISPs for dial-up internet
access, and free news servers, are difficult to come by these days.
happy posting, without problems, hopefully :)

i just signed up for a "free" posting account with teranews
(www.teranews.com). it's not really free, but almost. just a one-time $3.95
setup fee and you get 50Mb a day, which is more than enuff for the likes of
me. i'm using it right now and it looks pretty good so far.
i've been using aioe too, but i hate the timeouts and downtime on that
thing. so i'm hoping this will be better.

I get my newsfeed with my domain from my (paid for) ISP. It's fast,
unlimited, and holds posts for about three months.

lucky you. most of us did at one time. unfortunately there's a growing trend
for large commercial ISPs to drop their usenet service. we're being
offloaded to commercial usenet service providers, typically being offered a
subscription to one for non-trivial monthly fees on top of what we already
pay, our other option being to go ***** ourselves. this is no doubt why we're
seeing so many posts from google these days. of course it's only a matter of
time until google begins to charge a fee as well.

there are still a few free ones left. googling "free usenet servers" and

I've been using this for a few months now because my ISP's news server

you get about 20 posts a day with aioe, and it's random if the posts
come up straight away or if their is a wait... it's a good emergency
account to have though...

It seems to be working okay now. I also tried news.spiderlink.net and it's
working too. I'm doing my happy dance. :)
