No, I have been unsucessful in getting them to talk. Linus isn't all that
tiny.
I have some photos at :
http://photos.yahoo.com/teddybear10032003
I don't have one of Lucy because she hates the camera and refuses to
cooperate with me on the issue. But she looks alot like Charlie did.

they are all cute birds. interesting how the color can vary between

I knew a lady who had 2 finches, and I dont remember how old she said they
were, but at the time, when she told me, I wondered why her finches lived
many many times longer than any of my parakeets.
I also know that some of the larger birds, like parrots etc... tend to live
a pretty long life usually. Maybe, they tend to breed and raise finches
better than parakeets.

yes, that is strange. iirc, finches have a natural lifespan of only a
few years. parakeets usually live for about ten years:
http://www.letstalkbirds.com/budgie.htm#two
"The average lifespan of a budgie is 8 to 10 years. It is not unusual
for a budgie to live to 14 years of age and the occasional budgie makes
it to 20!"

large parrots can live as long as humans. parakeets (budgies), which are
small parrots, can live for up to 20 years.

Maybe *thats* what kept killing my parakeets. I have heard that about
non-stick Teflon pan fumes ( years later ).

Oh, and for the bottom of the cage, you need to buy the liter paper at the
pet store, because most if not all newspaper ink is poison to birds, and
they always go to bottom of cage and nibble at it.
I think birds are more expensive than dogs to maintain.

probably not so much anymore. most newspapers have switched to
vegetable/soy based ink. if you're worried, you can call and ask.

I didnt know that :-) , but look at the last sentence in 6 on this page
http://www.soyink.com/inktalking.html
So while you can get away with it on rodents which are a lot tougher than
small birds, it would probably still be unwise to line the bottom of a
birdcage with newspaper.

I know a bird that has newspaper at the bottom of his perch
but he is a big old African grey. Little birds might be
different. Someone on news:rec.pets.birds probably knows.
From what I hear, it's often easier to find the pet's name
after you get them. I've know ppl who had a name picked and
later changed it.

Better get some info at the library on how to care for that kind of bird.
My parakeets never lived very long, so i gave up on birds. Usually, they
caught cold, even though I always kept the cage covered at night.

Better get some info at the library on how to care for that kind of bird.
My parakeets never lived very long, so i gave up on birds. Usually, they
caught cold, even though I always kept the cage covered at night.
i have a book on zebra finches somewhere (probably still packed in a
moving box). i am aware that birds in general are very sensitive. also,
birds supposedly try to hide any weakness or illness, so when they are
so sick that you notice it, they are very ill, and you have to rush the
sick bird to the vet right away.

I sure do believe that !!!
Most dogs dont get that sick anywhere near as easily as most birds do, so I
believe that usually dogs are much more affordable to care for, and live a
lot longer, and are better companionship because they are smarter, in my
view.
Even my tropical fish did way better than birds. Maybe it was where i got
the birds though, I dont know.

When I was at my avian vet yesterday, I saw a bird that was 38
years old. Properly cared for, parrots can live anywhere from 30
to 80 years, depending on the species.
And if you think dogs are smarter than birds, then you haven't
met any African Greys.

Depends on the bird species too. Were yours budgies? They don't
do too well. Seven to 10 years is old for a budgie, and they're
very susceptible to tumours. I lost two budgies to tumours, a 9
yr old hen and a 3 yr old male.
