Just be glad I'm not French. I'd pose with my beret, goatee and
baguette,
not a single gal in ASD would resist moi!

The guy in Spain thinks sending in a picture is a pain.

Well, sending it in is the easy part, the problem is finding one. I had
a couple pics
somewhere in my drive, but they must have vanished when it failed, bc I
can't
find them in my backups. The ironic part is, I've let you guys see my
face more
than once, in a (then) futile attempt to move others to let me see
theirs, and now
that everybody is putting their pic online I can't find one of mine.
Typical.
I'll try to get someone take a digital pic of mine, or borrow a digital
camera (again!).
(I've got a few real photographs around, but I haven't got a scanner).

I killed my scanner, I was moving it out of the way for a moment and
didn't use the little lock at the back. Accidently bumped it and now the
stepper motor is in a different spot than where the computer thinks it
should be. All the pictures came out looking real strange.

Bummer. That's the problem with motors, and moving parts in general.
Can't
you get it adjusted? Maybe it only takes a precision screwdriver (and a
lot of
patience...).
I've found a couple photos, but now I'm hesitating to get them scanned,
let alone
let you guys see them - I look kind of gay in them (not that I have
anything against
gays, you understand!).

It's not worth repair. Nor is it "user serviceable". It was a $60
scanner, that lasted 3 years. Probably just trying to open the case
would destroy it. Just one of those things that pushes the world towards
filling a trash dump and buying one that's new and shiny.

A cheap USB model, right? The sign of our times, my friend. I wish I
could find
a second hand SCSI model, the sort that worked on just about everything
(assuming
it had a SCSI port). That's why I don't want to part with my verrry old
DeskJet 670,
it works like a charm in Solaris (and I bet, everything else that
supports Ghostscript).
(As a matter of fact, a couple years ago someone gave me a *real*
Postscript printer,
old, large and heavy... the thing was dead, unfortunately).

Yup, USB.
If I really had things my way I'd say screw the flatbed, I want a drum
scanner because I really just want to scan film anyway.
I used to have a deskjet 5XX and I remember having to keep a little
screwdriver to flip a tiny toggle switch so that it could print from
DOS. That was a REAL printer though, a printer with intelligence not
just the printing equivalent of a winmodem.
One of the old laserjets wouldn't be bad either, those were real tanks.
It's all USB and grunt work done by the CPU and windows drivers these
days. Really is a bummer. But it's CHEAP! Huzzah! Now it makes more
sense to just get another printer because a set of replacement ink carts
would cost more.
