Object: Blind Man Question re. Depression
A blind man goes through almost all his life never seeing. Finally he
sees for the 1st time but it only lasts for 6 months and then he is
blind again. Will he be better or worse off afterwards? This relates to
my case of depression. Thanx for the input.

Better. Any sight - even fleeting - is better than none at all. Reflecting
on what he saw during that time may change his life. And then there is
hope. If he regained it once maybe he can regain it again. Hope is
everything.

Ah, Flowers for Algernon.
True blind man in this situation wouldn't understand what he was seeing and
would be unable to process it. It would overwhelm and confuse him. He'd need
more than six months to sort it out and even then, he'd never really see things
the way we experience seeing, having had an early childhood of seeing and the
lifetime that followed it.

In fact, Dr. Oliver Sacks, in his book _An Anthropologist on Mars_,
wrote of just such a case. A man blind since birth has an operation
which gives him sight. But it's not much use to him. He sees nothing but
indiscrimate shapes and meaningless colors. He has no idea what he's
looking at until someone tells him what it is; whereupon if he looks
away, then looks at it again, he has no recognition of the object, and
has to be reminded again. Eventually an accident robs him of his vision,
and his frustration and confusion are alleviated. He's much happier not
being able to see.

I would like to think better, because he got to experience what the world
really looks like. Of course, it would be devastating for the man to go
blind again, but it's still better to experience being able to see than not
at all.

The point is, what caused him to be able to see?
And can it be repeated?

I think the 6 months would be wonderful to him, see things he's never seen,
the colors the intensities. However when he went blind again, he really
needs to focus on the fact that he got to see at all. He needs to realize
that normally blind people dont ever get to see, and now, he can acuratly
picture the world around him. When someone says that something is blue,
they'll know its blue, someone will be able to describe something, and
it'll be easier for him to picture it, cause he has seen it before. It
would be very hard for that person not to become depressed and he needs to
find people to lean on and help in dealing with the fact that he lost such
a wonderful thing.
