Bob's favorite DVD |
It's the only one he watches. Daniel O'Donnell, 'Songs of Faith'. I
just walked by and he was singing, "Here I am Lord, ...." and my sister
told me the other day they played that song at my father's funeral.
Man, got me. Bob's been home 1 week, and the doctor was right : it
would be like bringing a newborn home. I went out and voted while the
physical therapist was here. I tell ya, I didn't want to come back.
Just venting.

How bad is he? Caring for someone truly disabled is a big job. You're
going to need lots of support.
I'm sorry to admit, Brian, that I haven't been following this, if you
were posting about it.

Hey! there's someone out there! Hi Bobbie, not trying to be the center
of attention....
but yeah, he's bad. I think I can keep it short: He's my former
teacher from college, now 86. His domestic partner died 5 years ago, I
have been friends 29 years with them. I have been living with Bob for
5 years, and he's had a tough year, stroke in february, I get him home
from the nursing home in March, my father dies 4 days later, I sell our
house and move down across from my mother and sister , for help. But
Bob gets better, and we miss the farm. 3 weeks ago, Bob gets emergency
surgery, gangrenous gall bladder. He has a heart attack on the table.
I am told by the cardiologist, "He's not gonna make it." He revised
that to, "it will be like bringing home a baby." a few days later. So
I've had him home a week. He's very depressed, and he's a great,
interesting, interested guy. It's hard, Bobbie, but I'm freakin'
Mother Theresa, and I'm good at it. Scary as hell to be in charge of
someones life, medication, weight, sleeping, bathrooming,
feeding...he's in that weight loss thing my poor father suffered, went
demented and died at home. My buddy here...I don't know. Maybe he'll
beat back death, like John Wayne./Very serious, he is getting home care
from nurses, CNAs, PTs. I suffer from depression and a neurological
thang caused by years of medication tries. But this is life.
Thanks for your reply
Brian

Wow, Brian, I had no idea. I hope you know you are a great guy for
doing this. Jesus said "greater love has no man than to lay down his
life for a brother." That is exactly what you are doing, and there is
no greater love.
I will keep you and Bob in my prayers. Email me if you ever want to
talk.

Brian, have you contacted a hospice?
There's help in the system -- but you
have to work to get at it. Outside of
Boston, there's this kind of resource:
http://www.springwell.com/
Is there anything like this near you?
You can't do this alone -- and you don't
have to.
