borderline personality |
i hate when it gets applied to me. the only symptom i have is
self-injury, none of the interpersonal problems. the consultant
i saw labeled me with it. he's the second one out of a long line
of docs over the past 9 years who's done so. now it's in my
record again.
i don't know why i care so much, but i do.

I understand, I freaked when it was suggested to me earlier this year.
Luckily the therapist who was considering it changed her mind after a few
more sessions so it never got onto my medical record.
I hate labels and stigma. It really shouldn't be that way, that you can be
treated differently because of a single diagnosis by one doctor, of such a
subjective disorder.

i'm SO with you, girl. i got labeled with that one too, and it's
unfortunately stuck in my records now. i had a therp label me with it, and
then one of the hospital shrinks put it on my axis of whatevers in my

You care so much because it's not you. The DSM is misinterpreted a lot
by doctors and the like. They shouldn't be diagnosing that without
meeting the required criteria which is what, a least three or four of
the criteria. They need to classify self-injury under something else or
as it's own name rather than presenting self-injury as a borderline
trait.

yes, it's like Dx'ing ppl with fever as tubercular.

i don't know whether the problem's that he doesn't know, or
whether it's the fault of the dsm. self-injury plays a major
role in my illness. it shouldn't be left out of my diagnosis
altogether, but there's no way to include it without
misdiagnosing me as having bpd. he shouldn't have made a false
diagnosis, and the dsm needs to include self-injury as
something apart from bpd. i think my therp has a point when he
likens it to an obsessive-compulsive disorder. while that's
not quite it, either, it's a long shot closer than bpd is.
i guess i'm not as pissed at him now as i was when i first

Your surmise about the reason he included the Dx
is certainly better than what some of us inferred,
at first. Being the subject of an well-intended
falsehood, with the potential for future mischief
is infuriating, though.

I don't know if there are rules that forbid this, but if you explain your
concerns, maybe he would?
He could also consider replacing the diagnosis with "SI" instead, maybe.
Meeting one criterion only dor a DSM diagnosis should mean you don't qualify
for the diagnosis anyway.

It sounds, to one who doesn't know the system, that he's having to cover
the symptoms using the insurance categories, rather than by describing
them in words. We don't suffer from that over here, thankfully.

I can think of one other diagnosis off the top of my head that
self-injury would fit better in and that's with trichtillomania, but
then again, I don't know much about that, but there should be a similar
diagnosis for si'ers.

I used to be so angry and "scared" of the DSM4 book... I was really
worried about being labeled and stigmatized... now I tell myself that
there are an enormous amount of ways to label people... the important
thing is not to let other people's labels define who we are as
people... We are all much more then the (many) labels that can be
applied to us...

I agree with Humble. If you resent it as much as I do and I am not
borderline it might be partly because the medical professionals crappy
attitude about it. The proverbial "they" say it's a difficult disorder to
treat, because it's med resistant and only responds to thought
reorganization type therapies like DBT. Beyond that they don't have a lot
of positive things to say about it. Every mental health professional I have
met or read has said how *difficult* <insert impossible> it is to treat and
speak as if borderlines are throwaway's that can't be helped much. The
medical proffessional's failure thus far saddles people with an unfair label
and that makes me angry. If self injury is the only thing between you and
that
diagnosis then A LOT of us would be considered borderline, including me.
Don't let them label you and wear their ***** just because someone says
you have to. Or if you are in fact borderline, then break the boundaries
and show them that you can and do and will get well. You've done a hell of
a job so far. Sorry for the diatribe. This really infuriates me.

the worst of it is that i really liked the doctor and plan to
work with him in the future. i don't think i said anything in
our hour and a half appointment to be labeled borderline
except for the self injury. i did go through dbt because of
the self-harm and suicidality and it helps a great deal. it
might be that that's where he got the borderline from. i just
reviewed the criteria for diagnosing borderline personality
disorder, and it doesn't fit me at all. this is maddening.

our hour and a half appointment to be labeled borderline
And I do not think a pdoc, good as he might be, can pass a diagnosis in only
an hour and a half. It took years for me to get diagnosed. You have every
right to feel upset.

because it means that none of your thinking is allowable
And anything you do or say can be held against you.
checklist is the most unthought-through range of diagnosis's ever.
Based on a dubious and untestable etiology also.
This ****s, lisa. Too bad you have to work with this
guy, when he is entertaining the possibility that you
are untreatable. I am infuriated esp. bc it's you and
bc ppl who are professionals should be trying to
understand your condition, how it came about etc.

i have a feeling that he only diagnosed me as such because he
needed a code that would contain my self-injury, and this is
the only diagnosis that includes it. it was his secondary
diagnosis after recurrent major depression. i'm not sure that
it's really his fault, but it bugs me nonetheless.
btw, he took the most complete history that i've ever given a
doctor. spent 1 3/4 hours going over it, and this was after
he'd read the condensed version of my chart sent to him by my
current pdoc. when i left him, i felt that he had a very clear
idea of my problems and how i cope with them.

because it means that none of your thinking is allowable,
the PD checklist is the most unthought-through range of
diagnosis's ever.
why inflict spiritual warfare like that? why don't they
know the psychology of normals and their ways of "if the
cap fits, use it".
slunky's right, that there ought to be more latitude to
diagnose by individual symptoms like self-harm. he had to
choose borderline because self-injury is such a big issue with
me and there's noplace else to diagnose it. the system needs a
major overhaul.
