Hi Everyone,
This is my first post to alt.support.depression. I was first diagnosed
with OCD in December of 2001. Then, in December of 2004 I was
diagnosed with depression. This past weekend I hit an all-time low. I
think I know what my problem is, but I'm not sure. I think I'm bored
with life. I can't find anything that interests me anymore.
Everything seems boring to me. The problem is, I can't determing if
I'm bored with life because I'm depressed, or if I'm depressed because
I'm bored with life. I'm leaning towards being bored because I'm
depressed.
Is anyone else suffering from this chronic boredom?

maybe your ocd is making you do nothing obsessively. try doing something
even if you don't feel like it. see if it breaks the spell.

yeah, but look at it this way. you're not doing nothing. you're busy
fretting about being bored. that's your ongoing activity. one way
or another, the day goes by every single day. that's one thing you'll
never have to worry about.
tip: for the last word in doing nothing, check out zen meditation.
you might really like it. it could help you to feel better.

Yes. Because life IS boring. Like most jobs, it ends up being 90 percent
paperwork. But chances are your boredom and lack of motivation are the
result of depression which manages to suck the joy out of everything for a
lot of us. Once your illnesses are better managed you may find that will
change. Focus on that for now. One step at a time eh?

I would guess that the depression is primary, the boredom is a result.
It's difficult to get interested in anything when the whole world is
gloomy.
Also, depression is treatable, try to fix that and see if the boredom
relents a bit.
Just my thoughts on the matter.

Hi Charles,
Thank you for your thoughts. I just recently upped my OCD med - Luvox
- which is supposed to have anti-depressant capabilities, so we'll see
how that goes. I upped it just three days ago. I'm also on Risperdal
and Depakote. I was trying Geodon but it made me too jittery and gave
me horrible insomnia. I've been on various drugs now for about four
years. I don't see an end in sight.

If what I've read is correct, it is best to treat the depression as
aggressively as possible. A friend of mine has had good luck with
Luvox for depression with OCD.
It may be that the end is to realize that treatment may be a
continuing thing, something to learn to live with.It was difficult for
me to accept that.

It's not uncommon. It doesn't quite fit my situation, but
I have similar doubts (is it me, the depression or what?)
all the time.
Not being able to be interested in anything is classic
depressive symptom.

Hi Jordie,
I take 100mg of Luvox twice a day for my OCD. It's actually called
"Fluvoxomine" on the bottle. I still have minor OCD symptoms, though,
and I've been taking Luvox for about three years.
I'm like you, in that caffeine aggrevates my OCD symptoms. I don't
know about sugar, though, haven't really thought about that.

Hello, Stacey.
Yup, I for one am bored bored bored bored bored bored!
To counteract this pernicious disease I drink booze, punch doors and

Give it a go. It's not for everyone (especially if you don't like

Hi Victoria
quick reply, just what I can think of as I type -- the only IMO way to
deal with boredom is change direction. this could mean so many things.
as simple as changing the dial on your radio, going for a drive, or
even as "extreme" as moving to a new town, state or country. gotta do
something to break the boredom. I'm never bored with life, but i often
try to find ways to escape the worst parts of it.
