I'll lose weight, and eventually I'll fit in my old size again. For now,
I've bought pants with bigger waist size.

According to the BMI chart I'm using, anyone under 5' 8" is obese at 190
pounds. Marty said he was 5' 7". 190 pounds is 'very obese' at 5' or
under. I don't think they have anything for his weight at 3' -
hyper-grossly obese, maybe? I'd hate to think what a child would look
like at those figures.
Of course, there are people (no names, no pack-drill), who insist that
the BMI is wrong, since it says they are dangerously underweight, and
that doesn't fit their body-image of being too fat. Presumably it
happens at the other end of the scale, too.

I'd say it works for me, it lists me towards the top end of normal and
that's a fair assessment. A bit more belly than I'd like but that's
about it.

There are limits to the BMI. It's a quick test, not an absolute
measure. It just compares weight to height, it doesn't measure body
fat. My BMI is near 30 I believe, but I would hardly call myself obese.
Overweight, sure, I have a paunch in the stomach like many guys my
age. But I'm a squat, thick guy, I've always been at the top of the
"ideal" weight range for my height, even when I was lean and mean in
high school.

Name an alternative.
I suspect that any test that's easy enough to do yourself is inadequate.
For instance, all the blood pressure cuffs I've tried, even in hospital,
aren't even good enough to give consistent readings if repeated. That
means they can't be valid. Another example is the various depression
scales I've seen; if you have atypical depression, they simply don't
work. The rating scale is too easy - add up the yes column and that's
your score - therefore it's too easy to fiddle, consciously of
unconsciously.
