Object: BPD and depression
Ex-husband has just been diagnosed with BPD and depression. He has
checked himself into a facility. The doc has put him on Prozac and
Lamictal. I'm pretty sure his mother had the same thing when she was
alive. My fear is of this being genetic and how it might affect my
children. Is it too over-protective to look into my kids undergoing
psychological testing? They are 15 and 16. If there is a problem, I
would think it would be better to catch it early. Or would they
already be displaying problems if they had it?

Might well be worth keeping an awareness of the possibility if they're
not showing any symptoms now.
Depression can be genetic in origin (or the *predisposition* to
depression anyway) it certainly runs in one side of my family BUT not
all individuals, I know others with a similar background where it
skips whole generations.
Watch them, ask them, talk to them. Maybe something like this

might give indications before involving "professionals"
At least they got *you* looking out for them already, which is good!

Are you speaking about Bi Polar Disorder or Borderline Personality
Disorder?

I'm guessing probably borderline personality disorder? That, along with some
of the other personality disorders (e.g., dependent personality disorder,
etc.) tends to co-occur with depression for some people.
There is of course some reason to be concerned about one's kids inheriting
depression...it does seem to run in families and I know that researchers in
the area of behavior genetics have found at least some pretty suggestive
evidence of a hereditary link to a number of mental illnesses.
As far as the personality disorders go, some things I've learned: first
they're hard as heck to diagnose correctly. Second, there's reason to
believe that many of these disorders have much more to do with one's family
and social experiences than with heredity (often, but not always borderlines
tend to have experienced some form of physical or psychological abandonment
from those who were supposed to be closest to them).
I wouldn't be too worried about the kids becoming borderline, but I might be
a bit more concerned about depression - and it's possible that the kids
could start showing signs of depression fairly early on (I was probably
about 12 when I had my first episode).
Anyhoo, that's some of my semi-educated opinion. Take with a few grains of
salt. :-)
and yeah - I know, I'm responding to two posts at once. My bad. ;-)
