Object: Brain shivers?
I read a small piece on brain shivers, I wasn't quite sure exactly what
it was. I think I have a general idea, I'm hoping someone could tell me
whether or not this is what I experience.
I take 150MG of Effexor XR twice a day. It's rare that I miss a dose,
but when I do something strange happens. When I move my eyes sharply in
any direction, I get this sensation in my head, I can hear it and
occasionally "see" it. When it happens, it sounds very bass like, with
a mix of microphone feedback, there are two "thumps" and then it
disappears. When I 'see' it, my vision matches the thumping noise that
occurs. When this happens, it's very rare that I feel like my balance
quickly goes off balance. I noticed this would happen when I was using
Paxil and missed a dose.
So, what's going on?

Effexor is weird like that, don't miss your doseage.
Should you need to discontinue effexor do so very, very slowly.
When I took it I would have best described it as a doppler effect. It made
me nuts until I realized what the cause was, I mainly noticed it in quiet
places. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what was wrong with my
computer's sound card/speakers.

I forgot to mention that sometimes my arm or leg will jerk randomly,
this happens more often than the hearing issue, occasionally my whole
body will jerk when I'm falling asleep.

Welcome to the weird world of Effexor. Be careful not to miss your
dose! Effexor is *very* picky about late doses, and withdrawal effects
are a doozy. You do indeed get all sorts of weird noises, clicks,
dizziness, "brain shocks," etc, and they come on with remarkable
quickness when you are late with a dose.

I don't know what's going on, but it sounds familiar to me. Except
that I never heard it. Only felt it and saw it.

I'm not sure exactly why the sound occurs. It's a weird sensation, I
think that pretty much sums it up.

This is what you experience. Effexor is the "best" in
that dept., I hear.

So, what's going on?

Neurologically? Physiologically? Gee one would think
there would be doctors researching this with brain scans
and what-not. Maybe there are. In the 2 minutes I had
to research this online, I find that "brain zaps" and
"brain shivers" are in the about.com and wikipedia sites.
But that's not the medical literature. crazymeds
notes that Effexor is a double metabolizer with short
half-life for both metabolites.
Which is not to say that Effexor (and other Rx, e.g.
Lexapro, which was evil for me) is not an absolute
life-saver or restorative. It is sometimes.
