I feel awful when I don't breathe. I cannot smoke instead of breathing. I
have to breathe before I have a puff of my cigarette.
Definitively breathing is better.

i smoked briefly and quit because it was affecting my breathing.
i needed to breathe deeply to play horn and noticed quickly how
much more shallowly i was breathing.
not breathing makes me feel even worse, so why do i keep doing
it?

What breathing patterns do you like? I've always liked breath of fire.
Very cleansing.

when i breathe, i breathe well, deeply from the diaphragm. i
played french horn for so many years that it's second nature.
i've got over a 4 liter lung capacity.
i do this whenever my depression gets really bad. i don't know
why i hold my breath, but i catch myself doing it a lot.

sounds really scary. i was getting mild panic attacks at night
when i felt like i couldn't breathe. we finally figured out that
it was early withdrawal symptoms from my narcotic pain patch not
putting out enough juice at the end. i'm glad i'm off that crap
now.

i didn't know until i was off the stuff that the excruciating
pain i'd had before was no longer a problem. turned out to be
related to another condition that's in remission <knock wood
loudly>. i'd always thought they were related, but the docs
said i was wrong. i'm glad to prove otherwise. anyway, i
probably took the pain meds for a year longer than i needed
them.

i didn't have pain before the depression, but i did have
serious muscle weakness from myasthenia gravis. thankfully,
that's currently in remission. it was taking prednisone for
the myasthenia that threw me into severe depression. i'm still
fighting that eight years later.
my pdoc is in charge of the psychiatric consult service for a
large teaching hospital. his primary job is evaluating people
with serious illnesses for psychiatric problems, so he's
pretty good at sorting out which is which.

Lisa - Sorry to hear of your breathing problem. Could it be that you're
dozing in and out of sleep? Sometimes things like this can happen, then
you startle out of sleep. Also, some medication can have this side
effect. Sleep apena might also be something to check into. It could be
that your passage ways are being blocked in some way. Maybe taking a
Tyelonol or aspirin could help, if it persists, I would let your doctor
know. I hope that you feel better soon.

thanks david. i'm wide awake when this happens, and it only
happens when i'm this depressed. i recently had another sleep
study done, and i no longer have the central sleep apnea. i
had wondered if that played into it, but apparently not. none
of my meds should cause it. i'm going to mention it to my doc
next time i see him, but i don't think he'll have anything to
tell me.
