I keep encountering this word all of a sudden; first in the
British media, then it starts appearing in American sources.
Translation needed.
"Twee".
My best guess is that Liberace might have been considered "a bit
twee", but I'm quite prepared to find out that I'm mistaken.

No... Liberace was a bit effeminate; I think that's how you mean it.
Twee is more like what I think of as tacky or kitsch, but in a sort of
cutesy kind of way... I'm sure that anything that I actually describe
as twee is going to turn out to be something that someone collects and
adores, but I think of things like Precious Moments figurines and
pillows with cute sayings on them as twee. (My apologies to anyone
who adores these things; I'm sure I like things that you would think
twee!)
But probably a native British speaker could give a better definition.
It's a second language for me. :-)
