Bruno update |
x-no-archive: yes
Just got back from the vet. He shows some marginal improvement. He
looks terrible though, partly because he's dirty and stinky and confined
to the pen they keep in him. He still has a major head tilt and
stumbles to his right side. The rapid eye shifting is almost gone,
although he doesn't quite focus or look you in the eye. He went nuts
when he saw us, I've never heard him cry so loud and so long like that,
he definitely wanted to go home.
This combined with his really bad arthritis/dysplasia, he looks bad, but
he may be functional even if he looks really handicapped. The vet said
if it's this vestibular thing, then most dogs recover from this and
pretty much adapt to it.
Plus side is the basic blood work came back all good. The vet isn't
ruling out cancer or stroke, but she's leaning towards the vestibular thing.
wombn thinks it might be time, but says let's wait until tomorrow to see
what the vet says. She's leaving it up to me. He looks so bad when you
first see him, but then so did wombn right after her stroke, she
recovered a LOT from where she was that first week. Yeah, Bruno is an
old guy. But maybe he has another 6 months to a year. I don't want to
put him down just because his head tilts to one side. If he's able to
basically function even with some assistance, I can't do that to him.
If he's in misery and there's no real hope, then yeah, I'm prepared.
You just think your dog is going to be there forever. He's part of what
I come home to every night. Then one day he gets old, and then next
he's gone. I suck at this. We gave Sandy another 6 months, I don't
regret it. The puppy we had before her that got distemper, the vet was
calling me begging for me to give them permission, they couldn't stand
listening to her suffer, and she was gone, there was no cure and she was
going to die soon anyway. I don't know what to do, it's so hard for me
to make this call, he's been with me for 8 years now. I have a big
picture of him over my desk. How do you abandon that loyalty, that
friendship, that trust?

Hi Thor,
It breaks my heart reading all of this and I have an opinion but
probably not one that'll make you feel any better. Even though we
know our pets aren't going to around as long as we are when the time
comes for us to make that ultimate decision we have to do what is best
for our pets rather then what's best for our hearts. Now I can't see
Bruno, nor do I have the emotional bond that you have with him, but I
have pets and one in particular is my Buddy and I am not looking
forward to the day that I know I'll have to make that decision. You
can not compare how Wombn looked or behaved after her stroke vs Bruno
and his illness, they may be behaving similarly but... If what % said
is correct at 12 human years Bruno is somewhere around 84+ years old.
I can imagine me at 84 after suffering what he just went through or
even what Wombn went through I would be ready. I know you'd like to
give him that extra few months, or maybe even a year, you have to ask
yourself will he suffer with vertigo and sickness due to his
equilibrium being off? Even though the head tilt doesn't bother you,
how does it make him feel? How would you feel if you were around 84
years old? Your decision won't be any easier later; you have to ask
yourself one question hun, are you making your decisions for him or
are you making them for you?
My heart goes out to you, I sure hope he does recover and isn't in any
pain!
Jane

Whatever you decide will be out of love. My criteria would be whether

Thanks for the update Thor. I can imagine how stressful and painful
this is for the both of you, I'm sure it's tearing you up. You've
been so good to him and he knows how much you love him. You say he's
been your best friend for 8 years, and I know he must feel the same
way about you. I hope you can at least take some comfort in that fact
that he's had a really great life with you and wombn. I really am
sorry and I wish I knew something else to say that might be helpful.
I know you'll make the best decision you can for his welfare. You're
all in my thoughts.

If Bruno was that excited to see you, my guess is that it isn't time
yet.
When I was worrying about this decision with Allis, my vet said _I_
would know when the time came, that Allis would let me know. And she
did... she stopped being happy to see me, stopped trying to get up to
come see me when I got home, and there was the night I heard her
scrambling to get up and found that she'd soiled her bed. It stilll
took me several more days, but I finally woke up one morning and knew
the time had come.
I'm glad the big guy is gaining ground. As my vet trusted my
judgement, so do I trust the judgement of you and wombn. The three of
you will do right by one another.

Poor Bruno.....I really feel for you and wombn right now.
And if you do have to make the decision, you're not abandoning his
loyalty, friendship and trust, you're using all those things, plus your
strong love for him to make the decision that if he could understand, he
would want you to make.
That's the act of a friend.
