Bullied at Work? |
Please circulate:
Have you been bullied in the workplace?
One in five nurses in Scotland has been bullied at work in the past
year, according to a survey.
A poll by nursing union RCN Scotland found bullying and harassment was
a continuing problem in healthcare.
Bullying is said to be a growing problem, not just in nursing, but in
the workplace in general.
How can we beat the bullies? Have you experienced workplace bullying?
How did you cope? Send us your views:

Sometimes it helps to just talk with the people at work who you
have a problem with... I had a bit of a problem with a coworker, who
much of the time was friendly to me, but occasionally, he wasn't... now
I would say that 90% of the time he is friendly to me... I don't know
if you can expect more then that from anyone... he still is slightly
obnoxious and immature at times, but I'm sure the same can be said for
a great many people...

Brilliant ...... it's a good thing the BBC are looking into bullying in
the workplace. Take this case for example!:
http://www.nuj.org.uk/inner.php?docid=812
Or this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/537880.stm
And this:
a bit more here: http://www.bullyonline.org/cases/case45.htm
Or looking at the media in general:
http://www.mgeitf.co.uk/news/detail.asp?id=4029
As someone I knows, the media who we so often look to, to have our eyes
opened to important issues in society is a haven for bullies.
Commercial broadcasting is probably worse than the BBC. Actual cases
of threats of physical violence to employees who criticize management
are known.
One of the most famous verbal bullies in the history of radio is the
notorious Richard Park, currently affiliated to the EMAP radio group.
A man whose mental cruelty to subordinates is so well reported
throughout the industry that the stories of his behavior have become
legend. His long spell at Capital Radio in London will never be
forgotten by anyone working there at the time. It is still impossible
to meet anyone who has been in commercial radio for a few years who
can't tell you a Park story. For those who do not know him, he cropped
up on the BBC's Fame Academy as the headmaster.
How did he get away with it? He did because there absolute terror that
he would simply humiliate and sack anyone who got in his way. Ask
anyone about Richard's "red card" antics. The story of his demise from
Capital Radio was typical of the man.
The trouble is now that the media in general like so many other things,
is not fit for purpose. Important issues which matter to society in
general, should be addressed by commercial broadcasting, but they are
covered up.
I for one will stick with the BBC, in spite of their faults they are
the closest we get to free speech. Without them, no chance.

I was bullied at work, and they chose to support the manager rather than
me. Forced me to leave in the end: - its on this webpage:

With all due respect, the account is not very clear. If you are going to
allege bullying you need to spell out which acts of bullying you have in
mind, rather than hide them in a long account that many people would not
want to read to the end. Consider starting with a paragraph summarising your
case.
If you are the victim of bullying at work you have several routes to
compensation. One possibility is to take county court proceedings for
negligence. A more promising route, nowadays, would be to take proceedings
against the company for harassment - on the basis that they are vicariously
liable for acts of harassment committed by colleagues (or coworkers as the
Americans would say).
You should consider consulting a solicitor. Some suitable firms can be found

Thanks. I wrote that account becuase I find it cathartic and purges some
negative feelings. I have consulted a barrister who says that a suit
constructive dismissal may be in order. As far as I am concerned, I was
hassled for two months to produce results that no-one in the world could
produce, and then the company performed a damage limitation act to protect
my manager and blame it all on me. They then twice threatened me with legal
action to take down my website article and get me to remove posts on
newgroups and websites (as if I had the power to do that!), and din't care
two hoots as to the effect all this had on my mental health, the b*stards!
