I was looking for a simple way of chatting with my son. He doesn't have
his own PC so he is limited by what programs/software if available to
him. I don't know what browser is in use on whatever PC he is using
(several) and the by the fact that he never answers any bloody question
I ask.
I thought I found one, no bells, no whistle, great concept except I
don't think the bloody thing works.

When you log on, you get greeted by a bot. that's it. The names to the
right are people who went there couldn't get a response, ever, and left.
Most of them are me.
Once you logon, you can't logoff and have to use another nick next time.
I went to the FAQ in which someone asked the same question back in
2003(?), supposedly he fixed it. didn't.
I tried writing to him but I can't because all my passwords fail.
So here's the campaign: everybody go to the above url; logon; logoff.
Maybe if we fill it up, the programmer will fix the stupid thang because
it is a great idea which I want to be able to use. <waah><waah>

I have no experience of it, having never used it, but have you looked into
<http://www.myfamily.com/>?
Another possibility would be to build your own website using any space that
comes as part of your ISP account. I'm sure there are free programs 'out
there' that would give you a basic private 'chat server' that you could
invite people to log into, or to build a little 'family web forum' and
'web mail' system.
Either way, it should be possible for anyone who has a user-name and
password for the site to log in as and when they can from any internet
connection and using any reasonably standard or popular web-browser.
