behind our house, as well as going to real rinks on occasion.

Probably you can. Cold toes, though, I remember
the cold toes. (And the time one of my siblings went
out onto literal thin ice ... dad grabbed them back
so fast it was scary)

Wow. I don't think I've ever skated on a lake or pond. Just
rinks. I haven't skated since coming to New England, and there
weren't any skating ponds near us on Long Island.

No, I went once when I was a teenager. It started out okay, it was fun and
then I fell on my *****. The ice was hard. *****, I said, I will not put you
through that again, and that was the end of my ice skating career.
At least when you're learning to cross-country ski you get to fall in the
snow, which, lemme tell you, beats the ***** kissing the ice every time.
