Object: Computer Question For Slunky
Ok, Slunky, how about this... and I'll feel really dumb if it turns out to
be a simple task.
I have an Asus P4P800-E Deluxe mobo that is capable of booting a USB
device. I have installed a Siig 9-in1+Floppy. The Siig device has USB 2.0
CF and SD card readers.
Presumably I should be able to boot from a CF, MicroDrive, or SD card. But
I can't figure out how to get a bootable system on the damn things. For
instance, just a plain DOS 7.1 system, or Windows 98 startup disk.
My intention, if possible, is to turn a microdrive into my "DOS Boot" cd,
which contains an assortment of diagnostic and system management utilities.
Or perhaps even converting a Sysinternals ERD Commander CD to boot from a
microdrive.
Any ideas?

I was just gonna answer on that, as I have the same board. Are you
overclocking your system? I hit 250FSB on two different 865 chipset
boards no problem. If you're *stuck/forced* using intel (yep, AMD fan!),
I think the Asus implementation is great. I also still have the PAT
feature of the 875 chipset working at 250, which is something not ALL of
the o/c'ed boards will do apparently.
One thing I've heard people report problems with is if they're booting
from USB devices and then disconnect it. If they have a mixed setup of
SATA/PATA/Promise RAID/3rd storage adapter... Upon reboot you may have
to *repeatedly & obnoxiously* go back into the boot section of the BIOS
to reset the order. You're definitely going to be a "power user" if this
issue though. Just something to know about the boot quirks.

What happens when you try to boot with it now? Some microdrives just
take a long time to boot. You want to set your BIOS to external drive or
something like that. Make sure you format the card or disk as bootable.

It doesn't seem like the timing matters. I got it to work by setting the
USB Mass Storage setting in the CMOS to "Hard Drive". The "Auto" setting
just wasn't automatically doing anything.
Once I set it to emulate a hard drive, it worked fine. Cool. Now I can
use the three microdrives I have in place of my "DOS Boot" CD.

Yea. There's a lot of neat micro-OSes that can be run off those.

Cogito cogito ergo cogito sum.
(I think that I think, therefore I think that I am.)

"cogito ----> i think"
"ergo ----> therefore"
"sum ----> i am"
"ergo:
cogito cogito ergo cogito sum". Or how to speak Latin using
English grammar.
There was a comedy show over here, looong ago (like, early '90s).
One of the characters was (among other things) a professor of
"Gomaespuminglis", ie, "An English course to learn Spanish".
He would introduce a few words. For example:
Spanish English
t=FA you
cu=E1ndo when
libras pounds (the currency)
me me
libro book
de from
t=ED you
Then a scene would be shown, "illustrating" the use of the new
words: like, a guy tries to pick up a girl:
Spanish:
He: "=BFT=FA cu=E1ndo libras?"
She: "=A1Me libro de t=ED!"
"Gomaespuminglis":
He: "When you pounds?"
She: "Me book from you!"
Actual English (the intended meaning):
He: "When are you free?"
She: "I'm getting rid of you!"
I would get up early on saturdays just to watch this *****.
Don't miss tomorrow's diatribe: "How to curse in long dead languages:
part 1, Classic Babylonian".
