Depression and orgasms. |
I suffered from an intense bout, of quite traumatic depression a few
years back. Whilst the actual depression seems to have lifted, I still
suffer depressive symptoms (maybe this means the depression is still
around, but at a lower level, which makes it possibly more dangerous
because there's less incentive to see a doctor, than if i was suffering
from full blown depression).
Anyhow, one of the symptoms of this low-level depression is a complete
lack of sex drive, and even when i do engage in sex it gives very
little pleasure.
So, whilst i was surfing the web, i came upon a quite quirky story
about a drug called Clomipramine, used to treat either depression or
OCD, and one of the side-efetcts of this drug was that in a small
percentage of ppl who tried it, it gave orgasms when they yawned. And,
indeed, i think it even increased the frequency with which a person
yawns. What i want to know is, was this side effect only for a very
small percentage of ppl who tried the substance, or was it for a larger
percentage of ppl who tried it? Has anyone reading this tried it, and
what kind of efects did it give?
Reading about a drug on the web and actually learning about it's
effects from someone who's actually tried it are two different things,
so i would be very grateful to learn about it's effects from an actual
person, and indeed to learn about any other drugs which have PRO-SEXUAL
side effects, such as i think Wellbutrin does.
Thanks for reading this, and bye friends.

I tried Clomipramine some years back (as Brand name "Anafranil), and found
that it reduced libido though did not completely eliminate it. When I
first heard someone mention the above symptoms one time, I assumed they were
taking the ***** - but yes, apparently spontaneous, involuntary orgasm is a
real potential side-effect. From what I understand, it is extremely unusual
and affects only a tiny minority.

that's an extremely rare side effect, less than one percent get it.
however, 42% who take it cannot orgasm, and 20% are impotent.
wellbutrin, however, has a low incidence of sexual side effects and actually
increases libido in some. but it's a poor choice for an OCD medication.

This could be the basis of a hilarious Saturday Night Live sketch.
One thing's for sure: Despite all that yawning, you'd never get any
sleep!

Hanif,
Are you a guy or a gal ? Maybe when talking about sex, we could mention what
parts we have - ie which sex we are.

I wish I could give you an opinion on this but unfortuantely I don't
have any info/experience on Clomipramine. I am taking Wellbutrin (and
have also in the past, as Well XL, although I'm not sure how they
differ) but I haven't noticed that either have affected me sexually at
all--oddly, no SSRI I';ve ever taken (and I've taken more than I can
remember) has had any sexual effect on me. I'm sorry this post isn't
helpful, but this subject does interest me b/c every doc I've had has
always told me I'd have sexual side effects and that's never happened
to me...I hope others here can give you soem info you can use

A good doctor would never tell a patient she will have a side effect.
Side effects don't occur in all patients, and good doctors know this.
What your doctors should have told you is that you might have sexual
side effects.
In other words, you might not. Which is in fact what happened.
