dingbat the dog goes to school. |
so last night was our first obedience class.
<head in hands>
this dog is a raging lunatic. i mean, really. a complete and raging
lunatic. she's a good dog when there are no distractions. sit, stay,
down, come, paw, even a reasonable heel. add any kind of distraction,
and she's bouncing off the ceiling. add another dog and she's rearing
up on her hind legs screaming.
so you can guess how obedience class went.
we had the joy of ending up next to some woman with a jack russell
puppy who was cute as could be and is going to grow up to be a holy
terror. first off, the dog kept coming over as close as she could get
to luce and i, and the woman let her. and then the puppy would start
barking and growling at my dog, who then of course started trying to
slingshot herself at the puppy. and of course the lady is standing
there cooing to the puppy "ooh aren't you so brave? you're not scared
of that mean dog are you?" <puke>
the instructor kept telling this woman to move over and get out of my
space. she did but two seconds later would be drifting back over. i
wanted to ask her to please get her dog out of my dog's face before
she swallows her whole, but i didn't.
so, of course, mid-class, my dog rears up, flies backwards, and
manages to pull out of her halti headcollar and go running FREE FREE
AS A BIRD toward the jack russell. i tackled her before she got to any
other dogs, but ARGH. she just wants to play, but she needs to learn
there is a time and a place. that wasn't it.
at the beginning of class we all had to go around the circle and
introduce ourselves, our dogs, and tell what our dogs breed was
originally bred for.... "my dog was bred to eat other dogs" yeah.
you'd think that woman and her precious puppy would have given us more
space after that but no. that would have made my life easier, and we
couldn't possibly have that, could we?
so, anyhow, that was our first adventure in making eleusis obedient.
here's hoping next week is less.... adventurous?

Hi, e*. I laughed. Sorry, but I cracked up. Your pictures of luce
are of *such* a doll, and <laughing some more> (oh, dear) the picture of
her sudden, leaping joy at being unfettered and your as-suddenly
electrified self tackling her... oh man!
Katy and I had a nice time at obedience class. We learned what we
needed to, various methods for teaching the dogs, and I still apply
them, somewhat. Best of luck, from here on out.

i have to laugh in spite of myself, you know it? she's just so....
outlandish. after i got over being pissed at her of course ;)
i'm not sure how much i'm going to learn from this class-- everything
on the agenda she already knows, but we totally need the
socialization!! obviously :p

*muffled giggle*
Too bad they don't have just purely "socialization" classes for older
dogs. All I've seen so far is socialization for *puppies only*.
Seems to me that *controlled* socialization for older dogs would be a
good thing.

that's what she needs. she just loses her head around other dogs, she
wants so much to PLAYYYYYYYYYY. only the interesting bouncy dogs
though. the dog on the left side of us, a very nervous whippet, was of
absolutely no interest at all.
i wish i could find her a play buddy. i was hoping there would be a
candidate in this class, but i don't think there will. and i somehow
doubt she'll be invited to supervised play after class, since she's an
evil dangerous dog :-/ (not that i could stay anyway since i have to
go to work soon after)

Eeeek! I know it was traumatic but I had to lol at her taking off
free-as-a-bird to gavant around the class. Can you do a double-leash thing
so if her halti comes off you still have control of her? Even though she's
rowdy it still sounds like you are one up on the rest of the other clueless
dog owners.

i was wondering if those leash splitter things for walking two dogs
would work. one clipped to the halti and the other to her collar. i'll
have to see if i can find one. i'm really disappointed in the halti.
i might try her next week with the halti on (her "thinking cap") but
the leash hooked to the collar and see how that goes.
she is rowdy but at least i *do* something about it. it doesn't bother
me when other dogs are "bad" if their owners are at least actively
trying to correct the problem.

yup.
i am very very aware of my role in dog ownership because of what breed
of dog i chose. i have to be. if i am a pushover idiot owner, it could
end up costing me dearly. not so much with a jrt, i guess.

Jack Russells can be quite nasty; most breeds can, I think. The ones with
bulk and muscle obviously need more respect, though. They also tend to be
the nicest, given the right environment - my step-mother's Rottwielers
were always great fun and as soft as cotton-wool with the 'pack', but I
wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of one. (Not bright though - one
of them never could learn that she simply would not fit inside Dad's
jacket pocket - after all, she rode in there all the way home from the
kennel, the first time, and it was fun, so she wanted to do it again ...
and again ... <G>)

and she doesn't even know it yet.
the instructor actually has one of that puppy's littermates. she kept
telling the woman "if you keep doing that, you're going to have a
fearful/bossy/etc dog" but it wasn't hard to see she was talking to a
wall.
