funny. Wombn let's face it, they're not making movies for the likes of
us anymore. (Ever see American Pie? gag. Then again, I did really

They're not making movies for me either.I like art movies,or at
least a fairly well done drama. These days you pretty much have to
stick to the video store to see a really good movie.Luckily there's a
wonderful video store that has tons of great movies where I live(art
movies,foreign movies,documentaries,weird cult movies,basically
everything...though videos don't capture the real "experiance" of
being in the theatre.)though every year(especially this time of
year),there are a few good movies being released.Has anyone seen
"mystic river"?I thought that was pretty good.

I haven't been to a theater in well over 3 years. I think the last film
that I saw at a theater was 'Saving Private Ryan' which I thought was very
well done albeit it pretty disturbing in the first scene when they showed
them landing on the beach at Normandy. But then again, war *is* pretty
disturbing.

There were many horribly memorable scenes in that movie.

I will never forget seeing Saving Private Ryan at the theater because I saw
something that I have never seen before happen in a theater. While the
credits were rolling and we were all leaving, not one person in the theater
said a word. You literally could have heard a pin drop. It was very eerie.

I don't go to the theater much, it's all dvd and PPV.

Yeah, I don't do PPV but pretty much all of my movie watching is dvd and the
occasional movie on Starz or Encore.

Only Steven Spielberg could've directed that first half-hour of _Saving
Private Ryan_. But the rest of the film looked like anyone could've
done it.

There's lotsa good stuff out there, but the prices at first-run houses
make regular filmgoing prohibitive for the likes of yours truly.
Perhaps we should remember Pauline Kael's sentient cinematic
observation: "Great art comes along so seldom, that if we can't
appreciate great trash, there may be no reason for us to go to the
movies at all."

I want to see it Alvin, and speaking of Sean Penn I've been hearing some
great things about 28 grams - I thought Naomi Watts in Mulholland Drive
was stellar. I just watched 28 Days Later and enjoyed it very much.
An intelligent horror flick, really fun.

I'd definitely like to see that.

I really want to see that too.

Naomi Watts and Laura Elena Harring, drool... Had they kept their clothes
on I still would have thought it an excellent movie :-) I really like
David Lynch's work.

I just watched 28 Days Later and enjoyed it very much.

Excellent, yes. Another decent horror flick to come out of the British
isles in recent years is Dog Soldiers. No big surprises plot wise, but
well made and pretty enjoyable. Then again, I like my horror.

I went to see it because of Naomi Watts.
I think she was better in Mulholland Drive, but good, in this one too.

IMHO, you didn't miss anything. I saw it and wish that I hadn't. I believe
the word to describe it best IMO is 'sophomoric'. Now don't get mer wrong,
I like a little bit of camp just as much as the next guy but these days they
all seem to be playing to lowest common denominator (gratuitous sex and
violence) just to sell movie tickets. To me it seems like that a lot of
times they don't even try to be creative and artistic but rather that, all
too often, they choose instead to be raunchy and baudy.

i'm from mennonite stock. my grandmother and great aunts and uncles still live
much simpler but still with modern conveniences.
my foster family had no running water and no electric and this was in alaska.
you learn to wake up in the middle of the night to check the fire if you want
to wake up to a decent temp. the fireplace was downstairs in the center of the
house and upstairs where everyone slep was partitioned off with temporary
walls. we slept on mattresses on the floor. We three girls on one side, the
two guys on another and my parents to the side of both rooms...
actually none of it bothered me back then.

Almost all of my favorite movies seem to be from the 70s and 80s.
Ah, the good old days.

are we turning into old fogies?!?

hey, i'm 27 and give me a movie from a prior decade (prior to 90s)
anyday.

Try prior 50s and you have me interested

i somewhat like the pointlessness of the movies from the 80s. I love old
musicals though. two of my all time favourites are singing in the rain and
white christmas. gene kelly is one of my all time favourites.

I cringe.

Is there no line to low to cross anymore?

It is pretty bad, I agree. I thought Something About Mary was not
very funny.

and Shallow Hal

Shallow Hal was the worst piece of trash I've seen in a while. I
watched it through squinty eyes, hated it.

Wombn let's face it, they're not making movies for the likes of
us anymore.

*sigh* I know.

(Ever see American Pie? gag. Then again, I did really
enjoy Van Wilder).

naw, didn't see it. Looked pretty gross to me.

I thought it was hilarious...I'm warped though.
