Object: Does anyone IRC anymore?
x-no-archive: yes
I've gone into some Spanish language chat rooms, but the selection is a
bit limited. Actually, it's pretty nonsense - either sad sacks asking
if there are any ladies in the room, or a bunch of people posting
infinite variations on smileys and not saying anything.
I saw some possible rooms in Undernet, but I always feel weird just
popping into a chat room. I never know what to say, I usually wait to
see what others are saying first, but then I feel like a dork popping in
and not saying anything.
Last room I went in, some dude was sarcastic and hostile, I have no idea
why. It seemed to be a room for the usual crowd that was always there,
I just left. There are some miserable wretches out there - woohoo, this
guy is king of an obscure little chat room, knock yourself out, bro.

given infinity, one of them will eventually type every play by shakespeare.
in spanish, yet.

I saw some possible rooms in Undernet, but I always feel weird just
popping into a chat room. I never know what to say, I usually wait to see

i usually open with "hi everybody" when i go in. but if there are tons of
people i might just sit there and lurk because nobody's going to notice me
anyway, or care if they do. sometimes i've said, mind if i just sit quietly
for a while, it's my first time here. everybody's fine with it.
i used to have fun in #poetry and #philosophy. lots of all-nighter convos on
both. i don't even know if they're still around, it's been a few years since
i last went.

Last room I went in, some dude was sarcastic and hostile, I have no idea
why. It seemed to be a room for the usual crowd that was always there, I
just left. There are some miserable wretches out there - woohoo, this guy

one time i was using comic chat and landed in a room owned by a guy who
thought his wife had maybe left him the night before. didn't know if she was
coming back. he called himself "lonelyguy". he wanted to talk cars and
sports, and there were three or four others there to oblige him. i was just
hanging around saying nothing. i was using the slouchy beatnik persona. so
this sweet young thing persona walks up to me and says "hi, want to *****?"
and i said, "sure." then ensued one of the funniest and raunchiest chat room
sessions i've ever seen, ending with lonelyguy kicking everybody out.

Yeah, I was never all that crazy about it. Now I Messenger or Yahoo. I
like that you can send an IM in yahoo even when the contact isn't online for
them to pick up later.

a program called Trillian combines all the Messengers (AOL, MSN, Yahoo) as
well as IRC and ICQ
but I haven't tried the newer versions.

I bought Trillian for my wife. She seems to like it. She was getting
horrible computer performance having three seperate IM clients at once.
I use Gaim.

I never know what to say, I usually wait to
see what others are saying first, but then I feel like a dork popping in
and not saying anything.

sometimes, yes. I'll hang out with those that i met on talkcity (was once
the biggest chat community before yahoo took the crown)
when i had webtv. most of them have gone but a few remain on other IRC
chats.
on undernet, of course, there's #freeasd - I haven't been there fore
awhile (hey Owl if you see this, how are you doing?) and I feel bad I havent
been around there. i should go back. #freeasd is always a cool place.
sometmes quiet but always decent. if you have nowhere to chat, go there.

I have to agree. It was weird when you visited #freeasd,
and were gone again before I could say "Hi, impeach Bush".

Does your precinct use e-voting machines?
Then its quite possible that whatever you do, your vote
will go to whoever rigs these machines. Probably
some democratic incumbent given that you
are living in CA.
