Object: Effexor XR ?
Anyone else have any experience with Effexor XR?
I started taking it a couple of months ago...was feeling "better" on 75 mg
but not good yet (had a bout with depression a few years back and Lexapro
worked so I have a good feeling for when something is working and not) so we
bumped me to 150 nearly two weeks ago.
I was having some drowsiness during the day so I switched to taking it with
dinner but now I'm having trouble sleeping at night. My BP and pulse are
okay and I am feeling a little better, progressively, save for the inability
to get to sleep at night.
I was going to wait and take it at bedtime tonight to cycle myself a little
later to start taking it in the am, but since I have gastritis I don't want
to eat and take potentially upsetting meds at bedtime so I think I'll just
wait and take it in the am. with breakfast.
I'm hoping this does it because I can't keep staying up half the night and
sleeping half the day. I have to give up being self-employed and that won't
cut it in the work a day world. I also don't want to have to go off one and
go on another while trying to start a new job...eek.
I decided to try something other than lexapro because when I was on that
(and for sometime after) I had no libido. This seems to be a little better.
I just hope I don't have to choose between sex and sleep. I don't think my
marriage could survive that ;-)
Just wondering if there were others with similar experience.
Thanks for sharing if you have something to share...

Maybe you should try something such as Pamalar or Imiprimine, that may
be helpful in balancing things out some, you could talk to your
psychiatrist about adding other meds too. It sounds as though the
effexor may be causing some anxiety. I usually do better on lower
dosages of the SSRI. Hope that this is helpful.

Hmm...it's my family practice guy and my insurance runs out in a few months.
I think you're right about the anxiety and after googling "effexor
withdrawl" I think I might be better off tapering off now, before I've been
on for very long, and going back to lexapro, which worked well for me
before....
We feel it's situational (caring for an angryinvalid alcoholic
mother...don't even get me started) and I should beable to come off
eventually. Just need to adjust the chemicals and read and go to Alanon to
learn how to manage my mother and my reactions. I think if 150 of Effexor
is not as effective as 10 of lexapro, maybe it's time to switch.
Like I said, I was not excited about the prospects of the libido issues but
I'm thinking that might be the least of my worries if this is not as
effective and the withdrawls is as bad as I'm reading. I tapered of Lexapro
pretty smoothly
The switch may not be fun but perhaps better now than later.
Thank you very much for your input!

i'd try taking something in addition to the effexor. i used
remeron to good advantage. unfortunately, the libido problem
is common on most antidepressants, the real exception being
wellbutrin. i'm now on wellbutrin with cymbalta (which has
similar action to effexor) and doing the best i've had so far.
i don't recall whether effexor is out yet in generic (cymbalta
is too new). if you're going to have to go off it, be sure to
do it gradually. i tapered in 10 days, which was hell.
good luck with it.
