the cops
I am assured by my son that the name isn't cops, but pigs. Back in my
teenage years, ours were rozzers but a policewoman was a Judy copper.

The opinions given above may be mine. They might also
just be what I feel like saying right now, okay?

I've never come across 'shoms', and 'bobbies' seems to be historical,
journalistic (the bobby on the beat - it's the aliteration) or American.
I usually call them The Constabulary, or the police.

I'd heard they were originally called "bobbies" and "peelers"
because the original constabulary was formed by Sir Robert Peel.

That's certainly what's said ('peelers' is completely archaic). And
'coppers' because they copped people (early eighteenth century 'cop', to
seize). That's one that crossed the Atlantic.
