Object: ewwww (medical, slightly gross)
I have some kind of abcess on my thumb!
There's no cat scratch, no puncture mark, nothing. Except a lump
that's been growing for a week. Ice didn't work. Heat made it throb.
Aspirin helped a little.
Used a lancet a couple days ago to see if it was a blister. Nope.
Just blood. (and major pain from the pricking!)
********* gross part **************
Today, I finally saw a white spot near the side--right up next to my
thumbnail. Thanks to having superfine syringes hanging around the
place (for emergency insulin when my pump isn't working), I discovered
that there really is pus under there. Fairly deep.
EWWWWWW
Ok. So....
Got rid of a much ick as I could, then soaked it in peroxide for a bit
(til the bubbling stopped) then put on neosporin and a bandaid..
What do I do now? Do I really have to see a doc for this? Can I just
wait awhile?

Absesses are nothing to mess with. If you feel sick in the least,
follow up on it.
It seems, though, that you got the goods and that's a start. Watch
out for outside healing - not good. Keep soaking the sucker until it
goes down more and heals from the inside out.
Feel better!

Here's a compromise: call your doc and ask him if you need to come in. Bc of
your diabetes and bc you smoke (bad girl!) your circulation is somewhat
compromised, therefore , it's more important for you to take care of wounds,
skin, extremities, infections. I'm sure you know this, already.
Now, if you had a blood blister under your nail, I know a good trick. Heat up
the end of a paperclip until it's red hot. Touch it to your nail. There is no
pain bc there are no nerves in your nails. It will burn a hole through it,
relieving the pressure and stopping the throbbing pain.

ooo I'll have to remember that!
p.s. It's looking about 80% better tonight. If this keeps up, then
maybe by the time the docs wake up tomorrow morning, the problem will
be solved.

personally i'd soak it in hot water with nolvasan, which is a skin and
wound cleaner, several times a day and try to draw out any more ook
that's in there, and put neosporin on it.

I just get plain tired of having to go to the doc's so often.
Right now, I'm supposed to see my gyne and my eye doc (for
retinopathy). And then quarterly visits to the dentist (perio
disease) and quarterly to my endo. And I just changed to a new PCP
(one who is closer), so I'll need to visit her soon. And then I'm
supposed to go give a blood sample (procrastinating). And I was
supposed to get a mammogram but procrastinated too long on that one
and so need another lab slip for it.

Keep treating it with neosporin and if it doesn't look like it's healing or
it's making you feel sick at all I would say then definitely see a doctor.
If the neosporin is gonna do the trick there should be noticable healing in
a day or so.

Okay, IMHO, abcesses are nothing to mess around with. It takes nothing
for the bacteria to get into the blood stream where it can wreak havoc,
including sepsis. Since you asked for advice, I would encourage you to
go to a clinic or something. Bacteria growing sub-dermal is nothing to
screw around with nowadays because of all of the resistant strains that
are so wide spread.

You gotta be careful with stuff like that, wombn.
My mom just had an infection that moved into her bloodstream.
She finally went to the doctor, and they pumped her full of antibiotics to
do in the infection.
But she was evidently within 24hrs. of having it do her in.

Well, if it were something close to the surface of the skin, I'd not
bother with the doc (at least yet). But if it seemed to somehow come
from inside, I'd say get it checked out, I guess. Could it have been due
to a hangnail? You mention the pus being right up by the nail bed.

That's what I've been wondering. Or an ingrown thumbnail. I had
ingrown toe nails as a kid, complete with the operations.. *wah*.

I'm a doctor's kid and I reccommend you get it checked out.
Infection...which is what the pus indicates...is nothing to fool around
with. It can get into the blood stream and screw up a lot of organs. If
you haven't had a tetanus shot in five years, it can be fatal.
Neosporin is a good topical antibiotic, but doesn't kill every bacteria.

I've had toe nail ingrowns before, but not to the point of medical

I'd say so. Cats can give us nasty infections. Better to be safe than
sorry, although it does sound like you're giving whatever this is a run
for its money with all the peroxide and neosporin.
