19th and 20th.) Why didn't these appear in my mailbox when I checked it
earlier today or, say, yesterday or the day before or the day before that?

Because e-mail is stateless.
the sending e-mail just wanders off into the net following the path
indicated by next router it comes upon. if one pathway is too crowded it
follows the next best path. unfortunately there is not always a good
''second'' path. (probably a tenth or so anyway) sometimes the path leads
to a router with no route map for the destination. the poor email can
wander aimlessly for days (measured in microseconds). some poor emails wind
up in queues which may need 'human' intervention to clear. nobody knows
where or when these poor soul-less emails will ever be delivered.
or the FBI could be intercepting your emails and they forgot to forward a
couple because they needed to check a reference or two. ask for Inspector
Erskine.

of email can consist of thousands of independently routed IP packets
taking any number of paths, but as far as the mail servers at either end
are concerned, they're just talking one to the other. The routing of an
email message as a whole is made at a much higher level in the protocol
stack than IP routing, using, as you say, SMTP, and does not involve
routers. What delays mail for several days like this almost never has
anything to do with low level routing problems, it's usually due to mail
servers being down or getting backlogged and taking a long time to clear
their queues, stuff like that.
