exercise & depression |
Anyone else use working out to fight depression at all? It only seems to
work if I'm un-depressed enough to get off my ***** & do it, but then I feel
great. I've done at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise 6 days a week for 3
weeks now, and I'm feeling pretty damn good. However, I am still having
trouble sleeping, so I'm wondering if I'm getting a wee bit manic...

I do. I study and teach martial arts. By teaching, I have an obligation
that helps to get me off my butt. For me, it works great.

Exercise with me doesn't help depression per se much...
I used to bike for hours, and there was that "keep going, you
are almost there" hint that my depressed state would improve
but it was always just over the horizon.
But it does have an effect on my other tendencies to inactivity,
e.g. I have noticed that I have done some actual work on other
things I want to do after exercising a lot (such as 4 miles
twice a day not every day but fairly often) This takes a lot
of time though. I don't feel quite safe riding a bike in
city traffic, which is a bummer.

Not working out but I have started walking, only 20 minutes a day, but its
more than I was doing before.....I want to lose weight and get fit again and
the walking also lifts my mood....no troubles sleeping. I dont understand
the manic cycles, but are you doing your workouts too late at night, you
might be over stimulating yourself.

Tried it. Never helped me. Slept better but didn't chase away the
demons.
But there are plenty of people who swear by it, so it's definitely a
YMMV thing.
ALTHOUGH... _I would think_ that anything you do to improve your
health will also help with various hormone levels and such and it's
far easier to fight the demons with a health body.

I walk for 30 minutes twice a day partly to keep depression at bay and
partly to keep off the 45 pounds I have dropped since last August.
Since I have a bad hip, I can't always go fast enough for long enough
to have an aerobic effect but the act of walking and being out of the
house, does, I feel, helps keep the depression at bay.

When are you exercising? Aerobic exercise can give a person a lot of
energy. If done in the evening it can lead to trouble getting to sleep.
