extreme mood changes... |
does anyone notice how easy it is to have extreme mood changes, even
within a very brief period of time? It's strange how you can shift
moods, and thought patterns so rapidly...I was talking somewhat about
that with my therapist today.

What helps is trying to keep a sense of
perspective,proportion,balance,context and humor...(to very loosly
paraphrase Pauline Kale)It's funny how when I'm in one kind of extreme
mood,I wonder,is THIS the mood that's more "real" then the opposite
mood,is this the more genuine mood that reveals what's upsetting me
below the surface?Or is this extreme mood really unnecessary?Am I
exaggertating the negative mood out of habit?out of enjoying it?because
I don't want to deal with an even deeper, more true insight?Or is the
happier, more carefree mood more genuine? It's easy to be suspicious of
carefree moods when you are stuck in negative vicious cycles, but when
you get into them, can you trust them?that they are the real you? It's
often just hard to know...what mood is most genuine and real?what mood
produces real insights?what mood results from habit?from romantasizing
the negativity?I talked about that with my therapist today...

I'd suggest a psychiatrist rather than a therapist. Getting the meds
right has made my rapid acute mood changes much less common, and perhaps
less extreme.

Thanks.I've tried different meds a number of times...They've never
helped me on a long term basis.

Getting the right medication combination at the right dosages took me
(and my psych :) about five years.
We keep getting people coming in here and saying they've tried
everything: I don't think anyone would live long enough to try all
medications, combinations, and dosages. And even when you're stable,
psychs like to change things - mine's looking to get me off lithium
(which isn't supposed to be good for you long term).
