Object: family therapy
today's our first meeting with the family therapist and he wants
the whole family there. my younger son's been getting sick and
either coming or staying home from school very frequently. he's
easily missed 20 days of school this year. he's fine on
weekends, except occasionally sunday night. stomach aches,
nausea, headache, dizziness. it seems awfully stress-related. he
says everything's ok at school, he just doesn't seem to want to
be there.
i got a strong recommendation for this therapist, but when i
called he said he'd be happy to evaluate the situation, but he's
primarily a family therapist. most likely, it'll just be the two
of us for most sessions, but to start he wants all of us.
when i was a teen, we had a little family therapy. after a half
dozen sessions, the therapist gave up. he said he usually works
on strengthening family bonds, but in our case there didn't seem
to be any. we were just five people sharing a house, with the
eldest two of us setting the rules. so i'm a little nervous
about someone evaluating our current situation. it seems to be
ok, aside from some typical minor rivalry between the boys in
between being best friends. i guess we shall see.

I hope he is not being bullied at school, hence the jitters on Sunday
nights etc? Has the school got an anti bully program in place?

I hope he is not being bullied at school, hence the

bully program in place?

it was on the school bus. verbal taunting by two boys one
grade older. i know the bus driver won't permit it to
continue. she'll rearrange their assigned seating. we'll also
meet with his teacher and principal along with my son to
discuss ways to handle it. there is an anti-bullying program

Assigned seating is one step in the right direction.
One school bus I rode for some years had a double route,
the only one in the district. It went around to one
moderately well-off section, then came back and made
a longer run in the only really mixed part of the
district -- mixed as in some houses had no plumbing,
while some others had swimming pools. Mostly the first,
and those kids never let some of the others sit down.
They all had to wait an hour just standing around outside
before the bus came; sort of a bully-incubation program.

i used to take the late bus home from high school very often,
and a group of 10-yr-olds would lay in wait for me to get off
the bus to taunt me. just annoying stuff. but one day they
jumped out of the bushes with a rope and ran around me trying to
tie me up. i got loose and punched the leader in the stomach. as
a result, his father threatened to beat up my father and our
mailbox got blown up a couple of times a week for months. his
parents refused to believe that their baby boy would say or do
the things i told them. every so often, i wonder whatever
happened to him, what he's in jail for now.

As a kid being at boarding school, things can get ugly ...
meybe needs to find a friend or two to relate to.
I'll never forget a comment from a friend I've not been
in touch with after leaving school (which was kinda silly,
however move locations and all the rest of it - lose touch),
however been told he committed suicide, "if it were not for
all this we'd be OK".
I understand, however can't go into the specifics of the
comment.

he has a friend on the bus where he's been taunted, and his
friend has been getting it, too. i talked to the principal and
she's going to reassign seating on the bus to start with so
that dan doesn't have to sit directly behind his tormenters.

thanks slunky. mostly, i want to get to the bottom of what's

it went pretty well. it turned out that he'd been verbally
bullied on the school bus and didn't want to tell us. he's
being driven to and from school for the rest of the week, and
i'm going to talk to his principal, teacher, and bus driver
about it. we'll hopefully meet with the teacher, principal,
and daniel to discuss ways that he can deal with it. i hope

Wonderful. I hope so too, and I don't think the therapist
could have any serious complaints about your "parenting skills"
-- after all, you did see something was happening and
found him (or her).

BTW, how are you today ?
