Because 11 year old girls deserve to be called names? BS. If an 11 year old
girl acts in such a way it is the parents fault.

Well I agree with you there, so if my 11 year old is being a thoughtless
little pig I should stand in the mirror and shame myself and allow her to
behave as a thoughtless little pig?
I agree with you Droog, he was harsh, but after what I've lived through it
wasn't a shock to me. In fact after what I've lived through that was pretty
tame.

First of all "pig" is totally and completely unacceptable. A thoughtless
little "brat" maybe. A lot of kids that age are thoughtless little brats.
So it's an adults responsibility to teach them not to be, but we don't do
that by verbally abusing them. Thinking it is one thing. Saying it is a
whole other thing.
The thing of it is if you put what was said in a different context it's
still inappropriate. How many adults would say "you're stupid" or "you're a
thoughtless little pig" or "I'm going to straighten your ***** out" to their
boss in a sudden fit of anger and risk losing their job for it? I'm betting
not many. If adults can exercise impulse control in other aspects of their
lives and *not* say things because they come with repercussions to
themselves then they can stop and "think" first and exercise that same
control with their children because it comes with repercussions to the
child. A man who is thoughtless enough to not consider how his words might
hurt his 11 year old child has no business calling her thoughtless in the
first place. This is not to say he should be lynched by an angry mob but he
should have to take responsibility for his words and considering how
embarrassed he claimed to be before imagine how embarrassed he is now. And
rightly so.

I'm not sure what you do if you've made that bed. But you don't call her a
thoughtless little pig.

That's a shame. I experienced worse than that phone call also. But I still
think it was shocking. God help me if I ever become desensitized to the
emotional abuse of children.

By eleven, a child is starting to be affected by peer pressure (if they
aren't already). Being a child isn't a simple, unilinear process, droog,
nor is being a parent. Looking back on it, you'll see things already
that you're doing wrong with Buddha-head: you know he's your learning
child.

Sure, you'll always do things wrong. You just don't make them a habit. You
correct them, and that includes correcting yourself in front of your child
and apologizing.
I may have an edge in that I had a kid very late in life. So I've watched
the mistakes that my sisters have made with their kids and I've seen the
terrible results. I have seen the good things my brother has done with his
kids and have seen the glorious results.

Oh definitely. Don't think for a moment that I've not regretting and fallen
all over myself apologizing at some of the STUPID things I've said. I will
also state that my kids constantly tell me they love me and that I was and
am a great mom and wouldn't ask for another. So far, both are decent kids.
My 16 year old is a "bit" out of control but yet she's not. She's SO MUCH
like me in a way, which sort of scares me, yet makes me feel a bit secure.
What I learned from the verbal and physical abuse I went through definitely
made the parent who I am today. I could never go to my parents for NOTHING,
advice etc. My kids talk to me about EVERYTHING, sex included. Thoughts on
drugs, their friends behavior, girl friends, boy friends I mean everything.
We've had just each other for so long, I'm almost afraid I've stunted my son
to becoming independent and my daughter is overly independent. Yet I am
equally proud of all they've accomplished from so little guidance I guess
due to my working full time their whole lives.
To add what Alan said, 11 year olds today are waaaaaaaaay different then the
11 year olds I remember when I was young. I imagine the 11 year olds of
tomorrow will be waaaaaaaaay different then the 11 year olds today.

Of course you can judge him. You have to be a saint before you can
judge the obviously bad and out of control behavior of another person?
There would be no standards at all then. You could say for example:
"What he did was shitty, and what I did was shitty." Nothing logically
inconsistent there.

I have a strong feeling that if he had said "you are behaving
like a stupid little pig", the impact wouldn't have been nearly as
severe... but the fact that he said "you ARE a stupid little pig"...
that was a serious mistake... We learned in the non violent
communication class that it's extremly impoirtant to seperate the
person from the person's actions, to not define a person by their
behavior... even though the words were clearly said in anger, labels
like that can damage self esteem a great deal...
