It was just before christmas , I was eight so my brother micheal must
have been nine. Dad took us to china town in san francisco to by
christmas presents for everybody. It was one of those beautifull winter
days when the sky is so blue it almost hurts to look at it.
We were heading back to the car and micheal and dad where walking
behind me. I was skippin along and I looked across the street at st,
marys cathedral and Bing crosby came out the door with this little
fedora on his head and looked right over at me and smiled. I said Dad
thats bing crosby, and he smiled and said yeah , like it was no big
deal. That was a good day. jill

That's a cool memory. When I was nine I saw colonel Sanders in the grocery
store. I asked him if he was there to buy chickens. He laughed and handed
me a lollipop. :)

You know that feeling of de ja vu you sometimes get. where you feel
like that exact point in time , you've been there before. I was
looking for those kinds of memories. A moment that you remember when
you felt good. safe, whole. better then you ever do.

I have alot of problems with memory so I have looked for moments that
have sort of crystalized for me. Almost like scenes in a little snow
globe. I have others some strange. They are not significant , just
stray moments.

Oh, ok. I have one like that.
One time I was sitting outside and looked at the ground and saw an ant
hauling a piece of something, something almost too big and heavy for the
ant to pull, but it kept pulling it, doing all kinds of things to move the
food. I wondered about its life. I watched it for several minutes, until
it vanished in the grass. When it was out of view, I raised my head and
just then a beetle or something similar flew close to my head. Right when
the loud, flying bug got in front of my head, a big dragonfly came flying
from the other direction and just opened its mouth and let the beetle or
whatever fly right in, instantly ate. Right then it was like the whole
world changed, became nothing but constant change, nothing ever complete
nor incomplete, but perfect every moment in its state of change. Nothing
appeared constant, not even metal, concrete, rocks. Everything was
basically good, safety was no concern, everything was as it should be,
always. The sense didn't last long, two or three minutes, but it has
affected me ever since.

I would have answered sooner, Jill, but
for that tricky word 'favorite'.
Couldn't pick just one! But here's one
of my favorites:
My uncle was driving me and 7 or 8 of my
cousins (we were all well under 10 years
old) to a cottage in northern Maine. It
was a piece of crap car and shouldn't
have had that many passengers anyway,
but you could do that then. We left
early in the morning and it was maybe a
5 hour drive. We'd be there by lunch ...
if all went well. heh.
Along the way, there were several flat
tires and, of course, no spare. So we
kids did a lot of flagging down cars to
hitch rides to the nearest gas station.
And then we'd flag a ride back. The gas
stations were getting further apart as
the journey continued. Progress was also
hampered by the car stalling out with
increasing regularity. Then we'd all
push it to the side of the road and my
uncle would tinker.
A lot of this happened after it got dark
when it also began pouring. Pouring! At
one point, we had to pull over for quite
awhile because he couldn't see. The
wipers sucked, too. We were all gettin'
kinda (very) hungry but no one was
whining. It was as if we'd each decided:
don't make this worse. Besides, there
was the excitement of an adventure to it
all. My uncle was good with kids.
Finally, the car died completely. But we
were getting close! Someone drove us to
the cottage crammed in their car soaking
wet, exhausted, and famished. I don't
know if anyone besides myself was
hallucinating -- but I must say it was a
very pleasant experience.
We got to the cottage in time to see the
sun rise out of the ocean. That kind of
purple, then pink, then red, finally a
bursting blinding gold sunrise that
comes after a stormy night. We all stood
on the porch silently watching. I
remember feeling as if something bigger
than 'me' was looking out through my
eyes and that, somehow, these eyes had
seen every sunrise that ever occurred. I
remember thinking that I would remember
that sunrise for the rest of my life.
And I have. So far.
Thanks for asking, Jill. I enjoyed
reading your memory.
Gayle

going to prince edward island as a real little kid.
i decided to go and 'explore' on my own. so off i went. my mom called the
mounties and they found me
all of five years old wandering around the campsite. i told them "our camp
site has a U-Haul"!
yea right ALL campers had U-Hauls back in the 1960s. Every place we
went, i run off on my own to explore. my mom had to end up pinning a note
with our campsite number every place we camped. Times have changed ... i'd
go insane if my daughter went off to 'explore' on her own at the age of
five.
those were good days.
