Favourite albums |
I was sitting down, as people do, especially when their backs hurt, idly
thinking what my top ten albums would be. So I looked through the ones I
had turned into MP3s and started listing them. Then I started paring
them down.
After several hours of butch, ruthless chopping, I only managed to get
the list down to 23, so I decided to go for my top 20.
This is only valid for the time I made the list, and is from a sample
drawn only from my 12 Gb of MP3ed CDs:
The Beatles Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. So
many good memories from when this was new, I
have to include it.
Tottore Chessa Organittos. The best accordion player I've ever
heard.
Cry cry cry Cry cry cry. Lucy Kaplansky, Robert Shindell
and Dar Williams. It saves me having to decide
which to include.
The Doors L.A. Woman. My favourite rock album.
The Fratelli's Costello Music. New British band. Deliciously
noisy.
Lucilla Galeazzi Cuore di Terra. Good Italian folk, with an
excellent singer.
Mary Gauthier Mercy now. I'm not good at labels, but this is
blues. Must buy more.
Eliza Gilkyson Paradise Hotel. Everything she does is
excellent,
so I picked an album at random. She's good live,
too.
Patty Griffin Living with ghosts. Anyone who likes modern folk
should know Patty Griffin.
Norah Jones Come away with me. New material that feels like
old standards. The title track is the sexiest
song I
know.
Patty Larkin A go-go. Even more so than Patty Griffin. This
is
her second live album.
Elena Ledda Maremannu. Sardinian singer and musicologist.
She officially does things with her voice that
no
other woman can do. Don't ask me, ask the
Sardinian music scene. Sounds bloody good,
whatever.
John Lennon Imagine. Absolute classic.
Maria McKee Maria McKee. Her first album, and the best. (See
sig.)
Beth Orton Central reservation. I just like it, okay?
Bonnie Raitt. I had to pick one of sixteen. This pipped the
rest.
Kate Rusby. The girl who couldn't fly. Mostly traditional
British
folk, with a south Yorkshire accent. Good live.
Richard Thompson. Rumour and sigh. I had to have one, and this is
still my favourite.
K.T. Tunstall. Eye to the telescope. I think this is the best
of
her albums, because it's the only one I have. :)
Lucinda WIlliams. Car wheels on a gravel road. Everything she does
is great, but this is my favourite album.
Note: This list is alphabetical. Trying to list it on merit would be a
three Valium job.
So, what's your list?

hmm, that's really tough... I kind of wish there still were
"albums"... I'm not sure I can say the top 10, but among my favorites
would be:
1)Pink Floyd-Dark side of the moon(I used to play this every day
for years.)
2)Yes- Close to the edge
3)Joni Mitchell-Miles of Aisles(or any of her albums from the 60's
or 70's)
4)Leonard Cohen-Songs of Leonard Cohen(or any of his albums)
5)Joan Baez-Diamonds and rust
6)The carpenters-Horizon
7)Steely Dan-Pretezel logic
8Randy Newman-12 songs
9)Simon and Garfuckle-Bridge over troubled water
10Marlo Thomas-Free to be you and me
