Object: Fear of Heights
What's the deal with this? I've never had a fear of heights. Not growing
up, not as an adult. Never, until now.
Wanda and I recently took a nice vacation to northern Georgia, South
Carolina, Tennessee, and other states.
Along the way, in Cherokee, NC, they had a chair lift ride up the side of a
big hill. For reasons I don't understand, I had an intense anxiety attack
before and during the ride. I did it but was uncomfortable the whole time.

It seemed to get worse and worse as our trip continued. Next we entered the
Great Smokey Mountains National Park. In there was the Clingman's Dome, the
highest peak in the park, some 7,000 feet in altitude. At Clingman's Dome
was a lookout structure that was some 50-75 feet tall. To get to the top
you had to walk a circular ramp. It spirals to the right from the bottom
center of this picture to the lookout platform at the top.
http://www.bachastain.com/vacation/img_0590.htm
I was totally paralyzed. I got about 20 feet of the ramp and dead stopped.
Nothing would make my feet go further. I stayed there for 10 minutes trying
to get myself going again, and in the end, had to give up and head back to
the parking lot, a failure. After spending hours to get there, I couldn't
go the last 100 feet.
Next came Gatlinburg, TN. They had yet another chair lift, this one putting
the first one to shame. Almost a straight vertical climb, 3-4 times the
height of the first one. In this picture, it's behind the phone pole.

Again, major anxiety attack. Wanda and I had talked about doing that chair
lift all day and at the very last moment I had to apologize. I just
couldn't do it.
I don't know where this sudden fear of heights came from. How can something
like this suddenly develop?

I don't know "how" or "why" it develops, but I have known
of others with sudden onset fear of heights.

Interesting. Well,. I sure developed a case of it out of nowhere.
While we were in Atlanta, Wanda took me to a hockey game. We sat way up in
the upper rows which gave me a 30 minute panic attack until I finally
settled down. The fear of falling and sense of danger was almost
unbearable.

In college during freshman year all the huge mandatory classes had their
finals in the big auditorium like that. It always gave me vertigo.
I hated it.

I was in the 2nd level balcony shown in the picture. The 2nd level was very
steeply angled it would have been very easy to stumble or trip and start
rolling down the stairs. If that happened, tumbling past and over the
balcony railing was possible, which would have resulted in a 50 foot drop to
the seats below, probably resulting in death.
I couldn't believe it when I saw people coming down the stairs with both
hands loaded with food and beer. Not me! I was clinging to the railing and
seats with both hands moving one slow and careful step at a time. My
anxiety continued even after I finally found my seat. Eventually I settled
down and the fear and anxiety eased off.

You would have just tumbled onto the ice and then been able to
participate in a hockey fight.

Hmmm. Let's see. I have a choice between a broken and mangled body from
hitting the seats below, or a broken and mangled body from a hockey fight.
No wonder I was having an anxiety attack!
