[FEAT] Olympic champ reveals toughest fight |
By Sandra Lee
26jun05
A MONTH before she won her first Olympic medal, swimmer Petria Thomas
was so depressed that she considered hurting herself with a knife.
...
"I just remember thinking I felt hopeless about everything, about
myself, my life. I was just so scared and lonely, and I felt so
useless," she says. "It's like you are in this darkness and you can't
see the way. You want to get out but you can't see the way and don't
know what to do, and that's tough."
That May, Thomas took an overdose of paracetamol tablets. It was a
cry for help. She told a friend at the institute and left a note
saying what she'd done. Thomas was taken to hospital and had her
stomach pumped.

Well there you go. I never knew this about Petria. Good on her. I hope
she goes from strength to strength.
