[FEAT] Saffron used to treat mild depression |
Uses: Homeopaths sometimes prescribe saffron to stop bleeding. In
other medical traditions such as Chinese and ayurvedic it's used to
soothe the joints, aid digestion, increase appetite, treat depression,
improve reproductive health in women and detoxify the blood.
Dose: Usually, up to a few dozen milligrams a day. Saffron is sold as
a spice, as a supplement in capsule form and as an ingredient in
herbal formulas for digestion and detoxification.
Precautions: Large doses could increase the risk of miscarriage.
Overdoses can cause jaundice, dizziness, vomiting, cramps, bleeding
and even death.
Research: In test tube and animal studies, saffron has demonstrated
cancer-preventing properties; in animal studies, the spice has shown
the ability to improve learning and memory. In a recent preliminary
clinical trial, a small daily dose of saffron (30 milligrams) showed
promise in treating depression that is not severe. Few large-scale
human studies have examined saffron's effectiveness in treating other
conditions.

Oh, that's interesting.
Now I'm wondering about garlic and the like and about why yogis recommend
against them.

'tis. And Indian and Mid East shops sell bulk turmeric and
I think saffron in bulk, much cheaper and fresher probably
than the teeny cans in big chains.

I'd wonder too. In the .us, I wonder if the old prejudice
against garlic was a founder-effect (small population) of
the reaction of a super-taster. Totally speculative.

I've heard two explanations. One is that bacteria can contaminate garlic
supplies and so it is unwise to have a closed community such as a remote
settlement or closed retreat using it as a staple. The other is that it
supposedly interferes with calmness and makes a person more wound-up and
less able for contemplative practices.

TRUE pure saffron costs somewhere around $30 per OUNCE--or more.
IIRC, it's the most expensive spice on earth. I doubt anyone could
buy it in bulk from little shops--unless it's been diluted with
something like marigold petals (which produces a saffron-like color,
but not the same flavor).
I'm hoping my saffron bulbs will produce blooms this year.

Interesting stuff, saffron. The most costly spice in the world. Where I
grew up, it's used in cakes. (The good stuff is red, with no orange or
yellow bits, and not powdered).

Powdered? Who would buy that? Is it for dye or scenting water?

You can get liquid 'essence' or 'concentrate' too. When something costs as
much as saffron, you get people cashing in to sell inferior stuff or fakes.
