[FEATURE] There's loving and touching going on when therapy dogs visit |
Published in the Asbury Park Press, 06/20/05, STORY BY CHERYL MILLER
"Dogs can help to ease a patient's depression, anxiety and even their
physiology," says Winter, adding that simply petting a dog can lower a
person's blood pressure. "They provide unconditional love and
nonjudgmental acceptance. They don't care what you look like, if you
can walk or not, or if you're in a wheelchair.
"Dogs also provide a sense of touch that many people, particularly
those who have lost a spouse, don't get anymore, and a physical
interaction they might be starved for," she adds. Dogs aren't the only
animals who are certified to do this kind of work, says McCoy. Cats,
rabbits and even pigs can be trained, she says, adding that Care
Alternatives has a pet pig named Sherman working for it.

Yup I sure believe this. My dogs are great friends of mine. Just being
around them mellows me out.
Not just dogs but Rottweilers of course!
