fell asleep while driving |
i'm lucky not to have had an accident today. it was after 8 pm, and I
was driving on the freeway. suddenly i woke up and realized that my
truck had drifted halfway into the next lane to the right.
i'll go to bed early tonight. need to get more sleep.

Good idea.
During a particularly long bout of insomnia I woke up behind the wheel,
doing 70 down a residential street, about 25 feet before hitting a parked
car. I managed to keep it on the road... and I wasn't sleepy anymore.

it wouldn't have been a bad way to die. fall asleep, hit a parked bigrig
or a concrete barrier, and never wake up. of course, a more likely
outcome would have been that my truck would have smashed some small
car(s), perhaps killing or seriously injuring the people in those cars,
and the noise and slight bumps would have waken me up, unhurt.

there must be some useful advice somewhere about driving and sleep.
Like, how to know when one is too sleepy.

umm, no, I wouldn't say this so..

the latter part of this paragraph shows you to be completely
in touch with reality (well, I'd add the possibility that you might
be painfully injured and have to recover while thinking about your
various dependents being without care.)

"In touch with reality"...are you kidding me???? He's saying that it would
be just fine for him to fall asleep at the wheel, kill other people as he
swerves across traffic dozing away and then when he wakes up
"unhurt"...he'll walk away...and without remorse.
Well, it wouldn't go down like that. Even if our little psycho doesn't get
himself hurt, he's gonna have his little life turned inside out as his whole
life gets drawn out by the police. He'll probably be facing some
manslaughter charges...this is also the kind of thing that'll put this twat
on the front page of the papers. He'll be branded a killer.
It's not in touch with reality, it's in touch with *irresponsibility and
inhumanity*.
Nothing new from this little piece of *****...
I'd say the possibility of him being painfully injured doesn't bother me and
if it causes his houseplant to wither and a couple of bugs to die...who the
***** cares.
I worry about the other people on the road, the people who aren't popping
xanax and heading out the door wearing their SS day of the week underwear.

no, I wasn't referring to that paragraph. that one _isn't_ fine at
all, but I was replying to the next section, wherein he reconsiders.
and the first part if you read it, assumes that no one else is
involved in the crash.

I'm sure he's not the only person who has had an accident scenario
pop into his/her thoughts. I thought we discussed that sort of thought
here, not to endorse it but to acknowledge that this kind of thought
occurs. I think the reason the OP posted on the subject at all is
because he _didn't_ want to stray into another lane. I haven't
driven in a long while myself, so I don't have any especial counsels
on this.

I had the same impression you did. For him it might not be a bad way to
die...BUT...he *doesn't* want to injure or kill an innocent motorist on his
way out.

There are bridge supports, I've noticed them. I could get up to 120
before twitching the steering wheel. No traffic at night, when the
mood's lowest. Ever since they cut down the tree I was going to use,
it's been my way out. You don't have to feel actively suicidal to want a
way out; it's sort of comforting.
