That's bull.
The one that replies is the bull, with a grunt.
Although moose are generally timid, the males become very bold during
the autumn breeding season; it is not uncommon for them to charge at
moving trains. The females utter a loud call, similar to the lowing of
cattle, which can be heard from up to 3.2 km away. During breeding
(the rut), males will compete for females by fighting with their
antlers and hoofs and by fierce clashing of antlers. As well as
bellowing, the female moose emits a strong, odoriferous pheromone in
order to attract a mate. She also secretes pheromones in her urine
which lets the males know that she is in estrus. Females generally
begin to breed at 2, but more usually 3, years of age.

Even young kids can do incredibly good cow calls with just a little
bit of practice...

I like moose. Freed one from a game farm back in the eighties.
Maybe someone's been pulling your leg on moose hunting.

No, they all have the same behaviour, worldwide.
You're mistaking the refusal moan of a cow that is not in estrus with the
call of a cow that is in estrus. When the cow is not in heat, it doesn't
want to be found, the only males it wants to be around are young,
immature. If a bull comes along, it makes a moan to communicate that it
isn't in heat. When it is in heat, the cow bellows to attract a mate.
That's a call. That's why males have to travel during the rut, they're
being attracted by the calls and the scent of the females in estrus. The
cow call can be heard for two miles, it's an attractant. It's the loudest
and longest-carrying sound made by moose.
An explanation:
Vic Van Balenberg is a Research Wildlife Biologist who works in
Alaska's Denali National Park. He says that male moose make a sort of
croaking sound when they're advertising for a mate. If the female
isn't interested, she makes what's called a "protest moan."
"What the cow is saying is basically, you know, "Leave me alone". And
it serves a real function in that the older bulls, the more mature
bulls, will approach a cow that is moaning in response to being
courted by younger bulls, and he'll actually chase the younger bulls
off."
<http://www.pulseplanet.com/archive/Sep00/2227.html>
There is an explanation of the differenct sounds, either the refusal or
the mating call, on this page:
<http://www.camerahunter.com/the_mooseman.html>
Zounds, Batman, sounds!

Your exactly right Bev... I used to hunt big game before I broke my neck.
One time I tried to hunt a moose, but couldn't kill it. I could have shot
it, easy, had a really nice rifle all tuned-up. I was going to a good spot
and it crossed in front of me, I stalked it. It went to a stream and I had
a good shot all lined up, but I could see it so close with the scope and
there it was and I just couldn't kill it. Didn't need the meat anyway.
I'd like to ride one.

Well, even most big game hunters have that same feeling. It's a lot of fun to
get out in to the great out doors, and do some camping. Beats the he** out of
the city life, and all that go's with it.
I'd like to ride one.
Yahoooooo!

It's been almost a year for me, I've been too busy, no time off.
I'd like to ride one.

People used to, or at least some soldiers used to. Several countries in
Scandinavia and Northern and Eastern Europe used to field moose cavalry.
The training method has been lost.
