I think you are lucky. I visited Fermi Labs on a couple of occasions when I
worked. It's an impressive facility.

Several years ago the big accelerator was down for upgrades and they took
advantage of that rare opportunity and held a open house for the public. I
got to tour the place in great detail and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I love
stuff like that.

How nice. Did you were allowed to take pictures? I suppose you were not able
to see the interior of the accelerator. It's immense, Isn't it?

At the time I hadn't yet bought my first digital camera so unfortunately no
pictures.

We did see it. They took us down in the tunnel and we were able to see the
actual accelerator path. The circle is indeed huge. They also had the main
collision and detector chamber opened for upgrades so we were able to see.
that as well. It is also huge.

Damn finding cuts. America could have had an even immenser one if those
dumbasses in congress hadn't pulled the funding. It's bad enough being
taxed up the *****, and then they don't even spend the money on truly
worthwhile things.

Damn finding cuts.

I have to agree. I think the government should adequately fund general
scientific research as a investment in our technological future. I believe
science has transformed our standard of living for the better, and we need
to keep growing if we are to continue to compete with other countries.

Sounds like a good programme on TV tonight about ('Horizon', BBC2 for
those with access) the Large Hadron Collider. I may break a habit and
watch TV.

What exactly is not worthwhile about carnage and mayhem?

I'll have to think about that. There's a lot to be said about being able to
shoot foreigners and drive tanks through the sides of buildings.

No, this facility is in Batavia, IL. Fermi, was an Italian top notch
physicist in the first part of the last century.

Thanks. I'm familiar with Fermi. We have a small facility in the
south of Michigan on Lake Eerie. Named after the same guy but owned
and operated by the local power company. I don't know if they allow
tours at this one, tho'.

It could be recompiled on Mars and it would still be the same OS... I must
