As I understand it, Mini is referring to various un-named individuals in
this group who oppose the war and occupation in Iraq, who want to elect
someone other than Bush next year, etc. as "fifth columnists." (probably
referring to me, Alvin, Fred, Judith, and assorted others). If you take a
look at what's happening in the right-wing magazines, blogs, and so forth,
you might be interested to find that there are quite a few people out there
who take that notion rather seriously -- they really believe that a vote for
a Democrat is a vote for Islamic terrorists or that God has annointed Bush
to be president (and by implication anyone who opposes Bush is opposed to
God's plan). I wish I were making this stuff up. It is part of a
proto-fascist undercurrent in American political discourse these days. My
guess is that those who have been pointing their fingers and shouting
"treason" whenever I and others like me don't cheer every time Dubya grunts
out a deuce are only going to get more shrill and more vitriolic now that
they realize that liberals will fight back.

No, I was and am, referring to people who repeatedly post lies about the
situation in Iraq, the US, and Bush, solely in an attempt to undermine the
present administration; who must share with us their all consuming disdain for
the US and all things American. Crap like that is not, and never will be,
political criticism. Last spring, and obviously, continuing into spring '04,
Sidiot was nuttier then a fruitcake. Any news that was/is not stellar, he and
others, cannot conceal their glee. I can't wait to read all the ***** and
machinations people like you will be posting as we go into the elections. There
will be, no doubt, all these posts, about not wanting to live if bush is
reelected. Well, guess what – start writing your wills!

Lying about WMD to justify an invasion is pretty unAmerican, don't you
think? The
all consuming disdain for the U.S., all things American (and the
American people)
seems to be the province of President Bush and company when they tried
to sell
Americans a pack of lies.
"Simply stated, there is no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has weapons of
mass destruction"
Vice President ***** Cheney 8/26/02
"Iraq has stockpiled biological and chemical weapons, and is rebuilding
the facilities used to make more of those weapons. We have sources that
tell us that Saddam Hussein recently authorized Iraqi field commanders
to use chemical weapons -- the very weapons the dictator tells us he
does not have"
President George W. Bush 10/5/02
"The Iraqi regime . . . possesses and produces chemical and biological
weapons. It is seeking nuclear weapons. We know that the regime has
produced thousands of tons of chemical agents, including mustard gas,
sarin nerve gas, VX nerve gas."
President George W. Bush 10/7/02
"The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought
significant quantities of uranium from Africa. Our intelligence sources
tell us that he has attempted to purchase high-strength aluminum tubes
suitable for nuclear weapons production."
President George W. Bush 1/28/03
"Our intelligence officials estimate that Saddam Hussein had the
materials to produce as much as 500 tons of sarin, mustard and VX nerve
agent."
President George W. Bush 1/28/03
"In Iraq, a dictator is building and hiding weapons that could enable
him to dominate the Middle East and intimidate the civilized world --
and we will not allow it."
President George W. Bush 2/26/03
"Let's talk about the nuclear proposition for a minute. We know that
based on intelligence, that [Saddam] has been very, very good at hiding
these kinds of efforts. He's had years to get good at it and we know he
has been absolutely devoted to trying to acquire nuclear weapons. And we
believe he has, in fact, reconstituted nuclear weapons."
Vice President ***** Cheney 3/16/03
"You may be reading too much. I don't know anybody that I can think of
who has contended that the Iraqis had nuclear weapons."
Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of Defense 6/24/03
"Intelligence gathered by this and other governments leaves no doubt
that the Iraq regime continues to possess and conceal some of the most
lethal weapons ever devised."
President George W. Bush 3/17/03
"We know where they are. They're in the area around Tikrit and Baghdad
and east, west, south and north somewhat."
Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of Defense 3/30/03
"But for those who say we haven't found the banned manufacturing devices
or banned weapons, they're wrong, we found them."
President George W. Bush 5/30/03
"No one ever said that we knew precisely where all of these agents were,
where they were stored"

Bias? They're quotes Demi.
Clinton's a liar too, I've said so quite a few times.
He should have been thrown out on his *****.
Since when does defending liars and supporting stupid policy/stupid wars
become
the patriotic thing to do? Since when does questioning stupidity and
lies make
one part of a 'fifth column'? We are the greatest country in the world.
We deserve
better than to be lied to and to have our reputation dragged down by the
clowns
we've had represent us as our leaders. You want to settle for mediocrity
and lies,
well that's fine for you. But lies and mediocrity didn't make our
country great. They're
going to make our country safe. You obviously have lower expectations
for how our
country should be, and yet you call others anti-American?
As far as irrationality:
"Hallelujah! Can't wait to read what the asd/f
fifth columnists will say, eg, Poor Sadam! Be gentle with him!"
That was a bright shining beacon of rationality on your part, wasn't
it.

Just for curiosity I tried to look up the origin of the term. Here's an
explanation listed at this site:
http://www.wordorigins.org/wordorf.htm
"Fifth Column
This term for a group of insurgents, traitors, or spies is a calque from
Spanish. It dates to 1936 and the Spanish Civil War. That year,
Nationalist general Emilio Mola had surrounded Madrid with four military
columns and declared that he had a "fifth column" ("quinta columna")
within the besieged city. The quotation was widely reported in British
and American newspapers and the term quickly caught on and generalized."

I think it's politics as usual:
My opponent is anti-American!
My opponent is fascist!
My opponent has unnatural relations with barnyard animals!
I could go on with an armchair psychological analysis of how this is
an outlet for emotions we learn to repress through the process of
socialization, but... nah :)
